How many times have played or ran on the field turf during games? Thank you. I have experience running/walking during whole games in the hottest month of the year and it is just as hot as the real grass was!

Yeah, that is very scientific.

Here is a study done by BYU a few years back:

PDF Link

quote:

Shortly after the Field Turf was installed football camps were started. The coaches noticed the surface of the synthetic turf was very hot. One of the coaches got blisters on the bottom of his feet through his tennis shoes.

quote:

The results of the preliminary study are shocking. The surface temperature of the synthetic turf was 37º F higher than asphalt and 86.5º F hotter than natural turf. Two inches below the synthetic turf surface was 28.5º F hotter than natural turf at the surface. Irrigation of the synthetic turf had a significant result cooling the surface from 174º F to 85º F but after five minutes the temperature rebounded to 120º F. The temperature rebuilt to 164º F after only twenty minutes.

quote:

A budget comparison was made using actual dollars spent and for every dollar spent on the A.T. maintenance one dollar and thirty cents was spent on the natural turf (N.T.) practice field. While construction costs are very unbalanced, for every dollar spent on the N.T. eleven dollars and seventy-seven dollars were spent on the A.T.

quote:

Artificial turf surfaces have their place in the turf industry. They can work in environments where grass will not grow and are marginal. However, they are costly and not maintenance free. It is important to take all the factors in to consideration before making a large investment.

If we're used to playing on grass it's easier to play on turf when we go to bowl games/opponent stadiums that have turf.

I've seen it cause problems when the opposite happened.

I'm all for Turf! And the players have got to be tired of playing in a sand-pit!

Bring on TURF!

1) turf field

No problem with this as long as the field is marked in 5-yard increments the way it is now.

Anyone think it may be the type of grass in the stadium that is the problem?

I have been on the sidelines for numerous pre-games as recently as this year and that grass seems flimsy and it appears to lay down and mat too easily...but I ain't no turf guy.

I think some really good field turf will really play to our favor,I'm a traditionalist more than anything a winalist.lol.

We need the stuff we installed in the indoor practice facility, the turf the Ravens use.

My kneejerk reaction to this question has always been "Hell no, what about tradition, blah, blah, blah"

However, I've warmed to the idea in the past couple of years. Now I can really see a good synthetic turf in TS being a big boost to our team speed. Our field gets really sloppy in the smallest rains, anyway.

I now say, out with the old, in with the new: Synthetic Field Turf!!!

Yes...the cost of maintenence would be almost nothing. I bet LSU spends hundreds of thousands of dollars a year on the grass and field looks better.

Better check again. Maintaining field turf is very expensive. It's not just a turf, it is a system that involves hydromechanics and filler and well you get the idea. If someting breaks down you have a mess.

Then why are some many places, including high schools, replacing grass w/field turf?

My thoughts exactly. Hell, we've alread f'cked up the aesthetics of TS with all of the additions, why not change the playing surface? Just be sure the field is marked in 5-yard increments.

I played a pickup game with some kids at Harvard Stadium a couple summers ago (it was cool to play on a field Jim Thorpe played on once). They had just installed their field turf. I felt like a pussy for not getting dirty.

Do we really want to make our players feel like pussies?
