Not to get too ahead of ourselves as we have a lot of season still to go this year, but I think it' safe to say that Hunter leaves along with Rasco, opening up both starting DE spots for next year. I think Godcheaux Godcheaux is pretty easily our biggest playmaker at DT right now, but his body his still tall and lean like a DE. I saw Herron on the sidelines last night and he appears to have the body of a bigger, run-stuffing DE.

Would it be better to move one of these guys who have actually played a bit to start at 1 side and let Patterson, Clark, and 58 battle for the other side? Bower is a nice player, but I don't think his frame will ever allow him to be more than a backup, spot-snaps player.

You've got to think that with Lacatoure (and almost certainly) QT coming back, that Gilmore, Bain, , LMFAO, and Valentine could either finally push for a starting spot or at least quality backup reps. But who's gonna play DE?

There is no chance Bower has s starting spot locked up "easy" right now. I may be wrong, and he may wind up being a starter, but it certainly no sure thing at this point.

I came THIS close to starting this exact thread.

If (when) Hunter leaves, our DE's will be young & undersized - like our DT's this year. I, for one, would like to see either Herron or Godchaux as a SDE in the mold of Hill/Spears or even Lavar Edwards. Adding a little extra meat on the DL can only help our undersized LB's too.

Do it, Chavis

We absolutely need Godchaeuax where he is now for the rest of the season no question. I'm talking about next year with the returners/additions at DR and the losses at DE. He is an absolute stud. He could play DE at 270 and bea fricking super beast.

Yet you can say this as though it is a sure thing?

Bower has looked pretty solid when he is in the game so far.

I think DC will move, and wind up being an All-American DE for us. He is already that good making plays behind the line as an undersized true freshman DT. I really like #58 and think it says a lot that he's got so much playing time as a true freshman as well. Not sure about Patterson yet, though he looks the part.

safe to say that Hunter leaves

Here we go with the leave early predictions, When will it stop? Hunter has a hell of a lot to prove before he goes pro; he is actually very light for a typical NFL DE. Stay at LSU Danielle and enjoy the college life and LSU football.
Moving on, I hope that Herron moves to DE; that is what he was supposed to be. I do not understand how the coaches call him a beast , but he rarely steps on the field.

Can't you read? I said his being a sure thing starter is not a sure thing. He may wind up starting though. I said I think that he's not (yet, anyway) built for it. Mingo was small, but fast and athletic as frick to make up for it. I don't see that yet in Bower. Hope we do, just trying to have a different discussion.

You beat me to it. I accept that Hunter has potential to be a GREAT player. But till this point, he has certainly underachieved. I fully expect him to return next year unless he posts like 10 sacks in the remaining games.

Anthony Johnson leaving early and getting undrafted was the best thing to happen to the LSU D. It showed the players that unless they perform, leaving as juniors is useless. One game doesn't show it. It's the season. Against premiere opponents week in and week out.

Bro, forget LSU sending players to the NFL early, if you can't survey the current landscape of college football/the NFL, look at Hunter physically, know that he's already a 4th year junior who leads our team in tackles as a damn defensive end and surmise that he is more than likely heading for April's draft, then I question your intelligence.

Herron could possibly move back. Neal, Bower, Clark, Teuhema are all getting experience this year and all have looked well in spots. I think Godchaux was targeted as a tackle all along

Yes, I can read and I read what you said.

Sounds like you THINK his not developing into is a sure thing to me. With the way Bower has played this season, there is no reason to think that he wouldn't have the "in" for a starting spot next season should Hunter leave early. Who else on the team, based on this years play, would you put ahead of him for a starter next season at this point?

Perhaps you can, in fact, read, but I'm not sure "I think" means what you think it means.

Neil is getting experience at DT now, not DE. He is 6 ft max, I just can't see him ever being a viable option at DE. He may well turn out to be a very good DT though.

And I think they targeted Godcheaux as a DT too, but I don't think they had any idea he could be this disruptive at this weight this soon. Instead of bulking him up for DT, I'm just positing that they may should adjust the plan and keep him at his natural position of DE. I think he's more ready to be a force there next year than anybody. But clearly, a lot can happen over 9 months.

And let me be clear, I'm not shitting on any of our players or coaches. Just something I was thinking about last night as I finally got to see some of these guys up close. I just want to talk about our best balance for both positions, which, quite frankly, have not live up to the lofty standards some of our former DLiinemen have set the last couple of years.
