I just don't see the logic behind this game hype.

because you don't follow them and don't know what they have.

It is of course highly unusual for a team that was in the title game last year to get ranked high the next year

ETA :and not finish in the top 10 like LSU in 04 and 08 or Texas and Bama last year

Please tell me if I am wrong or kind of on point. It seems to me, if my memory serves correctly, you seemed to not really respect Oregon in any conversations we had when I first joined. I have noticed you actually defending them in some of the same ways I always have over this past season. Especially towards the end of the season. Have they grown on you or were you just being that way because you don't like me?

Must have me confussed with someone else, there are a bunch of people with various forms of the my screen name. I try and be fair and somewhat objective. I can't really think of too many times I've discussed Oregon specifically, I've defend the Pac 10 in the past. Never ripped on Oregon that's for sure. I respect them they have a good program, fun to watch, I even like some of the unis, though the ones they wore in the title game and vs OSU were bland.

We haven't blown ANYBODY out in years
I guess that depends on your definition of blowout and/or how many years; 48-7 4 years ago; 38-3 two years ago; 31-10 a season ago; and 29-7 and 41-24 this past season could easily be described as blowouts within "years" (and that's obviously not counting any of the UL-M/Tulane/etc. blowouts that we've obviously had).

quote:

But there is no piece of anything remotely resembling objective evidence that would suggest we will be running them out of the building by the beginning of the 2nd quater.
Even if that is the case, that is a far cry from:
quote:

But to think that LSU is just going to show up and blow Oregon out of Jerry's World is beyond fricking stupid and based on nothing but embarrassing homerism
Blowing them out and running them out of the building by the beginning of the 2nd quarter are two ridiculously different suggestions. I honestly believe we will blow them out (in the sense of a 17+ point margin of victory and no seriously doubt of the outcome in the last quarter of the game), and there are reasons to expect such. So tell me exactly how each and every one of the following can only be based on "blatant homerism" and is "beyond fricking stupid":

1) An offense that managed only 19 points against Auburn and loses it's top 2 receivers and 3/5 of its offensive line might not score a bunch of points on a defense even better than last year's Auburn defense;

2) LSU's defense -- far superior to Auburn's last year -- will likely replace its losses sufficiently to be better in '11 than Auburn's was in '10;

3) with another year of experience for our current QBs, a highly talented JUCO transfer, and a new QB coach and OC with a reputation for good QB development, it is likely our QB play will improve significantly;

4) an LSU offense that managed to score almost 30 points a game with one of the 12 worst QB performances in the country would likely score significantly more points with even mediocre QB play.

35-14 is a blowout, imo. And to insist there there is nothing to suggest this possibility but stupidity and homerism is a puzzling conclusion.
quote:

Actually, predicting anything besides a close game flies in the face of any reasonable objectivity based on anything that's happened with each program the last couple of years.
That's exactly what many, many people insisted about LSU vs. Florida and Bama last year, and LSU vs. Oklahoma in '03, and Florida vs. Ohio State in '06, and LSU vs. Tennessee in '01, and Texas vs. SC in '05, etc., etc. My point is twofold here:

First, everyone -- specifically including you and myself -- is internally inclined to view evidence contrary to their position as less sound than it actually is. Second, college football is so ridiculously nebulous that it is ludicrous to attempt to isolate any combination of observed factors (especially those observed by fans) as "legitimate" and any other set as "illegitimate" or "baseless". People who predicted that Auburn was going to be awesome in 2010 because Cam Newton was just about unstoppable most likely saw their arguments discounted as lacking "legitimate basis". And yet, their argument turned out to be exactly spot on and not "stupid" at all.

You seem to think our inability to consistently blow out even lesser teams, and the apparent consistency of Oregon's excellence in recent years suggest virtually no chance of a blowout win by LSU. I think that the likelihood of LSU's offensive potential to be unleashed by improved QB play, the consistent level of excellence of our defensive talent, and the likely dropoff in talent of an Oregon team that was (imo) already significantly overrated suggest a real possibility of a blowout win by LSU. At this point, either of us suggesting we have the prescience to know that the other's reasons are baseless is itself baseless.

Obviously my expectation is more optimistic than yours. But optimism equates to neither stupidity nor homerism, just as pessimism equates to neither intelligence nor objectivity. None of us have nearly enough knowledge of what will happen and precisely why it will happen to necessarily judge what is "stupid" or not.

Looking back, LSU played around 33 on that side of the ball. With that, around 14 were True Freshmen or Redshirt Freshmen. You want to do the math?

Like I said, LSU still has a young team.

Not hype...Yeah they lost players but kelly knows what he is doing up there....He wants an even faster offense this year which is nuts...brings back his starting qb and heisman candidate.....Be prepared for D thomas to want to go off against us since we tried to recruit him as an ATH....hes going to want to show miles he is a QB...with that said that also could be his downfall of trying to much

He is doing a good job up there, so is Les.

The addition of Krag will add to this.

Offense:
2 starting WR's
3 of 5 starting offensive lineman

Defense:
3 of 4 starting defensive lineman
2 of 3 starting linebackers

and we are breaking in a new OC and:

new QB*
new LT
new #1 WR
new RB
new MLB
2 new DT's
new #1 CB

* if Mettenberger starts

The only real concern for me right now is the DT position and if we can get penetration.if not it might be a long night for the defense. if we can get steady production from the DT's we should wear them down by the second half.

offensively, I think we should have decent success against them since Miles and Kragethrope will be on the same page schematically.

I wouldn't call breaking in.

This past year we had to replace these players:

Brandon LaFell
Chad Jones
Keiland Williams
Charles Scott
Trindon Holliday
Richard Dickson
Harry Coleman
R.J.Jackson
Chris Hawk
Danny McCray
Jacob Cutrera
Lyle Hitt
Perry Riley
Rahim Alem
Ciron Black
Chris Mitchell
Al Woods
Charles Alexander

an we still won 11 games.....

They will be a top ten team. I don't see how anybody realisticly thinks we will just mop up a team in the top 10. I think we will get the win, but starting off the season 0-1 ins't a far stretch.
