Congratulations to the LSU Men's Swimming and Diving Program for moving up one notch from last in the SEC to "second to last" thanks to a phenomenal performance from the Men's Diving Team in which 1st Place Championship points were secured in the Platform Diving Event.

LSU Diving Saved Swimming, a common theme since Geyer took the helm.

On the Women's side, they fall back down to a seven year low at 8th place out of 12 SEC Schools.

Is this as bad as LSU Basketball?

To be honest here, not really different under Schmitt or Cavana.

Edit: But I do agree with you to a point, the Tigers pretty much have 96 points every SECs for the next 3 years just from 1 guy. That is an amazing advantage, they have to be able to capitalize on it.

Geyer had some impressive performances from a select few individuals on the guys side. However, to really compete, they need to have much better depth. The Tigers had a shot of actually finishing top 5 this year which would have been quit a feat, but their best distance swimmer had a underwhelming performance and their middle 80% talent guys could not find a way to break into C finals.

Agreed. The top SEC schools score over 100 points on distance events alone. We score, like "zero".

Why can't we recruit distance?

Why can't we recruit period? We have one of the best training facilities is the Nation, as we both understand, Champions are made in the weight room.

And to be fair, we were ranked higher in SEC's under Schmitt (5th/5th) (6th/6th) (7th/8th) and that was with almost exclusively swimming points, diving was pretty much an non factor under him. What you don't know is that now it is Diving points that are saving the program, as a whole, and swimming is along for the ride (weighing it down). Just the facts. "The numbers speak for themselves." Isn't that right coach.

Time for a change Mr Joe.

The facility and tradition of LSU swimming and diving are abysmal. If you think the SEC is good at sports, this may honestly be the strongest of the bunch. Georgia, Florida, Auburn, Texas AM, and Alabama are all Top 10 teams and UGA and Auburn have as many national titles in the last 20 years than probably everyone else combined aside from maybe Texas under Coach Reese.

Next, club swimming in LA is no where close to states like GA, FL, NC, TX, etc. It is hard to recruit when you have to go out of state for everyone.

It Swimming and Diving. As long as we are scoring points at the NCAA meet the coach will be safe.

IF, LSU wants to COMPETE in all the Olympic sports, they should at least ACT like that is the intent and provide top notch facilities/coaching...if not, drop the less popular/successful sports and replace with those that will entail more interest and can utilize some of the first class facilities we've already invested in i.e. drop mens swimming and ADD SOCCER...drop womens swimming and add lacrosse...etc.

It wouldn't be a guess. It would be a given. I'll put my request in to Joe this week. Now that Les is gone, maybe he will listen, but I am not holding my breath.

rpg37,

I agree with you that LA club swimming is not what it used to be, Geyer and his cronies have been running the LA Club Swimming Board for a decade. Are you suggesting that we have to recruit from out of State because our leadership is holding LA swimming back?

Enough with the excuses for our lack of recruiting, it has been the same story for 8 years now. It is time for a change.

And to your point buttercup, that "it is hard to recruit when you have to go out of State", one of the swimming dynasty programs you mentioned, Auburn, had only "one" in State swimmer recruited from the State of Alabama last year. Auburn figured out a way to recruit from out of State. And the same can be said for UGA, the other dynasty program you mentioned.

Excuses, excuses, 8 years of excuses.

Mr Joe, it is time for a change.

Those programs also have a strong pipeline to produce international recruits. Cielo from Auburn who set the WR in the 50-yard Free while under Marsh was from Brazil. Two others from Brazil at Auburn at the same time. Alabama has been hitting Australia hard. Heck, even Delta State just recruited a New Zealand 100m Breaststroker who goes 1:00.5. I mean, LSU is not doing this and have not created any pipelines or shared visions with in- or out-of-state programs - much less at the international level.

I don't think the attendance at swimming and diving meets will be much different if they had the best teams in the SEC. Compare basketball attendance between last year and this year.

Yah, I noticed how strong Alabama is coming on these days. That South African Fly/Back guy is something to watch.

I though we had an Estonian pipeline going at LSU for a while but that fizzled.

The program is always going to be a doormat until we invest millions into facilities. Feel free to write the check instead of countless swimming threads about things we already know (namely, we suck$

The Nat is outdated, agreed. Florida Gulf Coast kicked out buht at NCAA's recently, like by about double points, and they don't even have a facility. They train at a near by community lap pool that is a dump, no seating, just a pool. I agree that a new natatorium would be nice, but it is really not necessary, to get something going.
