I vaguely remember (or mis-remember) one or more games on TV when Jimbo was OC, and the commentator... probably Gary Danielson... commented on Jimbo scripting the first 10 or so offensive plays for each game. With that feedback, he started making additional adjustments.

A couple of questions from there...

1) Is it correct to say that if you scripted your opening series and planned your 4th play to be a pass play, you're pretty much going to run a pass play no matter the down & distance and defensive alignment? (meaning you will strongly resist checking into a running play even if it's 3rd & 1.)

2) Curious if anyone knows Cam's philosophy to start games? (aside from play 1 = run to Fournette or screen to Guice)

Obviously scripted drives will already be based on adjustments made during film study leading up to the game. But it also seems an intentional resistance to making initial adjustments... I assume because you think you know how the defense will really act and because you want to avoid taking any bait the defense tries to give you right off the bat.

I guess a third, more hypothetical, question would be if scripted opening drives might be more advantageous to young QBs like Harris because it simplifies the QB's thought process when he knows he's starting with a pass to the flats, then a toss dive, then a long pass, then sweep, etc. If the order of the opening plays is pre-determined, there should be no confusion about assignments from any players and less thinking in general; just execution.

Almost everyone scripts at least the first 10 plays these days.

Couple of reasons... The players get confidence during the week that they can execute them, and your oc has a clearer mind during the week than scrambling for last minute ideas at game time.

Most coaches stick to the script no matter what, unless it is a weird situation like we're 4th and goal from the 1 and 4 verticals was scripted.

I remember hearing, post McNeese game, that none of our plays had been scripted. I'm not sure I believe that, though.

You script plays to see how the D lines up and reacts to formations, motions, etc. I tend to believe that we saw scripted plays against McNeese.

Scripting doesn't mean that you run those plays in order no matter the situation. It means you want to run certain plays -'in the right situation - as early as possible.

More than that, you want to give your young QB something to look at. You want to quiz him coming off the field - what did you see and what did you do? That's how a coach judges what kinds of reads he can make as the game progresses.

Yeah, hard to believe but Brandon Harris has said that they do not start with scripted plays.

First play. Play action hit the tight end on a seam route.

Maybe things have changed, but normally there are 1st down scripted plays and then down and distance plays to chose from. Not many coaches are going with a run on 3rd and long just because it's the 3rd play on the sheet..

Scripted doesn't mean it's gonna be in order. They are plays for down and distance. Mainly, what the OC wants to do is see how the opposing defense is gonna play certain formations and motions. from there the OC can make adjustments on and finalize blocking assignments, reads, etc.

I know that we have seen a few videos of Guice getting a pass in the flats this spring. It sure didn't fool Mcneese st. Hope we have a play off of that

The purpose of scripted plays is evaluate the defenses reaction to the sets and plays. The plays are selected to adjust blocking, pass protection and patterns. Plays are normally scripted for the first 2 and possibly 3rd down for each new first down. They are call scripted because they are selected to be run early in the game.

That's the part I was most curious about. It definitely makes sense the OC would want to run some base plays to confirm how the defense has prepped for certain offensive sets. But to what extent do they deviate based on down & distance or if they immediately spot a mismatch, or other advantage... like if they plan on running the ball but spot the safety or corner cheat up too much on a run blitz, would the QB have authority to audible, then fling the ball out to a receiver, etc.

In that sense, it seems that a script is usually more like a flowchart full of if/then statements than a flat out list of plays to run in order... I googled "how often college coaches script opening drives" after my original post and read that it is very common, as BigEd said, but got the sense that it varies how a script is employed... as you suggest (and some coaches do prefer to call games instinctively instead of scripting).

"Almost everyone scripts at least the first 10 plays these days. "

So as a DC, why don't I run a slightly different defense for the 1st ten plays??

Then we're both back at square one.

I don't believe most coaches script plays. DiNardo did.
