re: Russell Shepard...either never got the right chance or was just not what he seemed to be?

All that ever needs to be said is that Miles never, ever, recruited from high school and coached up anything even close to an average QB. All of his best were transfers.

Miles was an Idiot. Think about the 2011 NCG and the number of guys on offense who were on the team and did not play quality time. On a night that your offense looked like Dog shite. OBJ, Landy, Mettenburger. With a month to prepare.
Absolute insanity. The amount of talent he had. He should have managed two titles, minimum.

His head coach was a skill position player killer.
His head coach was completely unimaginative.
His head coach was terrible.
He was not the best passer. But to think in an era of Jordan Jefferson we couldn’t find a single pass play for him? Or that we didn’t know what he was as a passer coming out of HS? Or that we couldn’t coach him up enough to be able to competently execute a single pass play in 4 years? Or that our coaching staff or systems were not able to incorporate a single cut, upfield straight line speed type?
These are all questions of a rhetorical nature. Shepard was recruited well and never complained and never got in trouble that I can recall. But he was grossly misused by one of the most inept coaches to ever seen stalk a sideline at LSU.
If we are being brutally honest, Shep was never going to be a FT QB. Neither was or is Taysom Hill of the Saints. He’s not a starter at any position. But a weapon you have to scheme for. Which is what competent coaching can do for an Uber talented but not starting caliber quality talent at a high level of football.
Les Miles held our program and a litany of kids back from achieving their maximum potential and our maximum ceiling for success as a football team. For years.
Thanks for the memories. But good riddance.
I wish all the best to Shep…

Les "we have a want to not play Russell Shepherd at QB"

He played the required 5 years minimum to get his NFL pension so whether he had a HOF (I know he didn’t) career it was a backup he’s got this pension and his business.

He had the misfortune of odell and Landry co.ing in behind him. He was making some plays his first 2 years

Let him throw. Daniels throws a ball 100x better than Shep. It was bad. Like really really bad. Think a duck shot out of the sky and falling uncontrollably to the ground spinning and flipping all over the place. That duck was Sheps ball.

Shep wasn't under utilized, he was actually over utilized and should have had less carries and plays at RB/ WR. Skill wise he was similar to Jontre Kirklin. He took away plays in which we had better players who should have had those reps. The move to WR was the best thing that ever happened to him and enabled him to have a NFL carrier.

Did he really have a "booger" vault attached to his belt?

He proved them all wrong by having a decent NFL stint
Decent? He caught more than 10 passes in a season twice and never had 25 catches in a season. I wouldn't call that decent. He made rosters.

The dude could not throw in the SEC and was an average (although pretty successful) receiver. He did fine. I don’t understand the controversy. He was given every opportunity.

This I agree with. Les and company definitely didn’t know the proper way to handle him.
What? They literally tried getting him the ball every single way possible. Screens, handoffs as single back, handoff out of the i,handoff out of the gun, short passes, deep passes, swing passes.
Russel Shepard just wasn't that explosive. He dominated highschool but when it came to the sec and the nfl he wasn't that. He was literally caught from behind in a big bama game.

The best thing Shep had was his intelligence, patience, and work ethic. Yes he was an athlete, but not elite.

His size & workout were basically identical to Justin Jefferson lol

In the right college offense maybe he may have been explosive, like playing in a RPO, spread or something, but yeah with Miles that's not gonna happen. But that's college football for Shepard, the pros had him pegged right by converting him into a WR because that's all he would have amounted to in the pros. Shepard was basically another Antwaan Randle El.

Great athlete but probably the “jack of all trades, master of none” situation.

What is the difference between those two guys? Or is there a difference? Obviously, they had different coaches in their careers. But I’m curious to know if there is any other difference between the two. Is it all coaching?

not trying to be an expert. Data is data. They have very similar athletic traits.

One has always been a WR, in WR-friendly offenses dating back to HS.. The other switched positions and played for a coach who did not know how to use him. Not to say he would ever be as special as Justin Jefferson. But their athletic traits are similar (size, run, jumping, explosion)
