Miles even said publicly himself he and Chavis had a come to jesus meeting about playing Beckwith over Welter.

I haven't seen this but if true it explains part of Chavis whole attitude and him jumping ship. I have thought for a few years that Chavis felt he was "above reproach". his defenses after 2011 began to decline. yes, he lost a ton of talent to the pros early but the recruitment wasn't refilling the positions with equal talent and Chavis himself seemed "locked in place" with his scheme. this scheme was figured out in late game situations (certainly by Bama).

Chavis was overall a damn good DC but him leaving is a good thing for us. I hope Steele works out but we may need to make another change there. I think we'll be better off, esp if we continue to get the top talent.

U need to edit your post about the white guy r it will get whacked! Someone on here gets butt hurt When u mention his name.

I am one of the posters that have defended Welter over the years, but it doesn't have anything to do with him being a white guy. I defended him because he was a LSU Tiger, and I personally don't think that LSU "fans" should be bad-mouthing any of the players.

does your definition of "bad-mouthing" mean we can't offer legitimate criticism of Welter's performance???

Good lord, fella, Welter signed on to play football at an elite football school. That comes with high expectations, and he shouldn't be immune to criticism if his performance isn't good enough.

Now any criticism certainly shouldn't include personal attacks, but I haven't seen any of those. Welter is probably a good kid and I thank him for his efforts, but he simply wasn't very good at this level of football.

There were several posts that included personal attacks.

I believe that legitimate criticism is fine, but when the entire defense gets man-handled by an opponent yet only one or two players get criticized, that isn't fair. Beckwith is twice the linebacker that Welter was last year, but there were times that Beckwith played just as poorly as Welter, yet everything that went wrong was Welter's fault.

Hell, after the bowl game, there was a poster who said he hated Welter's guts for playing so bad on defense that game. If my memory serves me right, Welter didn't get any defensive snaps that game, he only played on special teams I believe. That's some of the "bad-mouthing" that I am referring to.

This will always be one of the biggest question about Chavis. What he saw in Welter to continue playing him I have no idea. He looked bad from the big cat drills all the way until he finally got benched. It seemed like Chavis just didn't want to be proven wrong, like it was personal.

I know Chavis did some good things but it seems like his last few years he was coaching on another team.

If you read between the lines, CLM showed Chavis the door

He too was tired of the end game crap.

I actually saw something this summer on SECN that Miles had to insist Chavis put Beckwith in over Welter when he finally did.

Yeah, I agree with you on this. The way Chavis ended his time at LSU, it's hard not to think that all he cared about was himself and that he didn't give a rat's arse about the team.

Was I the only one who was concerned about Welter's well being on the field? I thought he was going to get killed during the Miss. State game.

Grandad knows his stuff. You could tell Bama had plays scripted for the 2 minute drill just for LSU. Those late minute drives were executed to perfection. They had it figured out. Getting Steele gives us some insight in their thinking.

AJ McCarron said they knew exactly what LSU was going to do defensively.

Chavis became increasingly Fat and lazy by not recruiting or really giving a shite about the Defense because he felt like the Offense wasn't pulling its weight. Fact of the matter is, he purposely set the D to not have the necessary players to play the correct scheme to stop the Offense in critical situations. At Florida in 2012 lost 14-6. Vs Alabama at home 2012 & 2014. Bowl games against Clemson and Notre Dame where we lost by a total of 4 points for both games. He is a very poor closer.

Trust me TAMU's D will not be better this year, the year after, or the year after that. Thank God he is gone. Coach Steel and O will have our D working like a well oiled machine.

Chavis likes small fast guys. He doesn't play 250lbs LB's. That's why Beckwith was a DE for his first year.

like Welter?

Why didn't Kwon play MLB then?

We actually completely changed our 2 minute defense after Alabama in 2012. We played a lot more press coverage and even blitzed a little bit. Hell, Mills had the Bama QB dead in the water this year to end the game and missed.

He couldn't figure out 2 minute defense despite changing things up. I think more front four pressure on the QB and complex blitzes will help a lot
