While Welter was a liability, Beckwith was so confused and out of position he was no better. People neglect to mention that he constantly was out of position.

They problem with a great athlete like Beckwith is that in high school he just ran to the ball. In college the offenses recognize that and trick him. If Chavis hadn't done what he had to do, he would have kept on being out of position and been a huge liability.

Even though it was known he was the future, you can't put someone the field that will not follow his assignments.

The comparison between Welter & "Lead Shoes" Dunston has been rightly made many times here. The difference is when Dunston played LSU had NOBODY ELSE to try, the cupboard was bare.

First, Chavez wasted Beckwith's freshman year playing him as a D end. Should have put him in the mix in the middle from day 1. Evidently, the D could only line up and make the appropriate adjustments with Welter on the field.Perhaps Welter has a future in coaching. Players make plays, Welter was not SEC linebacker material. They seemed to get caught out of position a lot with either guy on the field early in the year. Coaching?

As much as I despise Chavis right now, I seriously doubt that was solely his decision

It's impossible for me to believe that Chavis would have allowed Miles to force him to play a player he didn't feel was best...at Linebacker (Chavis' position group) no less.

Do you really think it's possible that this was going on?

I could understand you thinking that there were non-football things that were going on that interfered (maybe he wasn't as dedicated as they thought he needed to be...maybe he wasn't putting in the work on the preparation side, etc.)

But, it's not plausible that Miles just had a different opinion than Chavis, and Chavis allowed it to happen.

This took too long to appear.

There probably isn't a position on the field harder for a young player to make an impact than MLB. It's hard for me to be upset about a coaching staff taking it slow with a talented player at a position notorious for overwhelming younger players. It's not the skill, it's the decision making at the speed of the college game.

And while Welter is hardly all-world, he was a decent placeholder until the more talented, younger player was ready. But this a fight over the past, who cares anymore?

Im just happy he is on the field for us now and apparently knows the ins and outs. While middle linebacker is a mental position making calls, after the ball is snapped, athleticism takes over, or lake thereof in the first half of last year. If Welter was our best bet early, so be it. It let me know where we stood as a defense early on. Looking for bigger and better things this year.
