What would be your expectations and/or predictions on LSU's record following the firing of Miles? Since it is clear a down time of 8, 9, and possibly 10+ wins this season does not meet many people's expectations, do any here think that those expectations would be met with someone new?

It is more likely that LSU would have at least one 7 win season following Miles's departure, and that is assuming the replacement would pan out eventually. We've seen that it's dangerous to assume this.

I for one think it would be a mistake to replace Miles, as it stands now. It's vrtually impossible for a team to transition from a very successful coach immediately to another very successful coach. Partly because schools don't usually fire very successful coaches while they are still succeeding. And partly because the transition itself is a huge obstacle.

The definition of successful can be debated here. Usually opining on Miles's success would be along the lines of saying he is successful, followed by some qualifier steeped in opinion and lacking much factual backing (i.e. speculating on the future).

The calls for his termination just seem terribly shortsighted to me.

Which record would that be?

I guess I am just not bothered by other people's opinion. He will be the laughing stock even if we win 11 games this year. It's good ratings. I'll take the laughing stock and a winning program without hesitation.

Do the calls for benching JJ seem short-sided to you as well. He's got a better winning percentage as a player than Miles does as a coach?

But he's probably just a shade better than Chris Relf as far as SEC West QBs go.

I'd argue that Miles is the WORST coach in the SEC West right now. Every single coach in the SEC would beat Miles consistently with equal talent.

I would expect at least parity with other SEC West coaches.

This staff is the highest paid staff in the nation, they are paid to win championships. We could pay the next guy 1 million dollars to win 8 games and save us 2.75million. The new coach would be paid less and would have to earn his payday

You didn't really anser my question, and this

Is such an assinine comparison. For one, we have seen who his replacement would be, and know that he has outperformed JJ. I think Lee should start, but again, you were a shade off on the actual subject of the OP.

So your expectations would be we would hire for savings, and go on to be a perpetual 8 win a year team?

He is running the program into the ground and alienating the hell out of our fan base. Want proof of that, take a look at the number of people showing up for the TAF tour this year......pretty abysmal in comparison to past years by all accounts.

No, it's not.

LSU could get a better coach than JL is a QB.

If you don't understand that then you don't understand the value that LSU has as a talent base, football program etc.

You bench a player when they're consistently underperforming. You do the same with a coach. That the comparison totally undermines the idea that Miles shouldn't be fired because he's 7-1 is your problem not mine.

So the Saints should start Chase Daniel against the Steelers?

The guy is a stubborn dumbass. His teams are undisciplined. He needs to geaux. I really do not care about the record. What win is that big this year or last? Think about the Tennessee, Ole Miss, and Penn State games - do you really think this guy is a good coach?
He should have fired Crowton at the end of last season. Instead he keeps him, now he has the 100 ranked offense in the country. Whatever happens this season lies squarely on Les' shoulders. He gets paid way too much money for the lame offense he has.

My point is that we pay these guys to win championships not finish 3rd. A high school coach could coach this team to 3rd place finish with our talent for a 3rd of the money. Why dont we add a clause to Miles contract, you dont make it to Atlanta, we dont pay you 3.75 million, we pay less. I bet he runs more than the 8 plays they run now. I bet Sheppard would get the ball more than twice. I bet our defense would blitz more........etc

I'm sure there are some older than me who would tell you that the 90's pretty much sucked, and yet the support was consistently overwhelming. It sounds like the fanbase has changed for the worse. I respect your opinion about the future of the program, although verfiable facts would contradict it. So you have no expectations following his departure? Have you even considered it?

I guess the point of this thread was missed. It was taken as yet another soap box for experts here.

This is what I have suspected for a while now.

I think he has been very successful at LSU. I guess that doesn't answer your question, but it's all I can say for sure. Some would say winning a lot of games makes you good. In that case, yes he is good. Some say winning championships every year makes you good. In that case, there are not very many good coaches out there. Some say a wordsmith is what makes a good coach. In that case, no, he is not very good.

you really don't get it do you?

Forget for a minute that you have any ties to LSU. Let's forget that you love Les Miles. Objectively ask yourself this question:
Does this team, in any way, consistently look like it is well coached?
To clarify, "well coached" means the following:
Low penalty numbers
Few turnovers
Consistent production on either side of the ball
Consistent execution of the gameplan
A gameplan
A look of control throughout a game
Swagger
Discipline
Knowing where to be and being there
Maximization of available talent
Motivated to play every week, for 60 minutes
Continuous play by play improvement
Continuous game by game improvement
Adjusts to wrinkles in game

If you can say, post truth syrum, that this describes the LSU football team in ANY way, I'll concede your point. Unfortunately, the only argument you will have is, "the only thing that matters is Ws and Ls". OR "He's the winningest coach in LSU history". OR "Nick Saban lost to UAB".
