The problem is that with the exception of the Jan 9 BCSNCG, Les Miles does not get blown out of games. We always feel we are in the game and could win the game. We are never ready for defeat.

The last 4 losses occurred on the opposing teams final drive.

Bama 17-21
Clemson 24-25
Georgia 41-44
Ole Miss 24-27

Prior to that the losses were a one possession game.

Bama (11/3/12) 17-21
Fla (10/6/12) 6-14
Ark (11/27/10) 23-31
Aub (10/23/10) 17-24
Penn St (01/01/10) 17-19
Ole Miss (11/21/09) 23-25

the point I am trying to make is that I think we feel so rotten after a loss because we are generally always in the game with a chance to win and are are only a whisper away from victory.

But when its the same mistakes OVER and OVER that cause us to lose these games it means we're not fixing any of the problems

Captain Doofus is no better at managing the game today than he was @ Ole Miss in 2009

Or that we try to dismiss losses so quickly just like you did in your post. A loss is a loss, and losing is never good. A lot of this fan base have come to accept losing games as a chance to find the bright spots. There are NONE in losing.

So we're not allowed to feel like the staff has some serious issues based upon the fact that most of the games you listed, LSU had a chance to (in a few cases) put the opponent away on offense but didn't, and (in almost every case), give up a late TD way too easily that cost us a tie/lead at the time.

Is the staff not supposed to learn from this?

Is Chavis not supposed to change what he's doing late in the game based upon the fact that teams have figured it out and move the ball easily against him?

Is Miles not supposed to learn to go for the killshot, or how important it is to put a competent offense on the field?

Is Miles not supposed to learn how big of a factor time, and therefore, timeouts are in these close games?

As you say - we're going to be in a lot of close games since we don't get blown out, so we'd better start learning how to win them rather than lose them.

Most of us are sick of seeing the same thing, with thew same results, and expect better.

Man. We haven't been blown out in a long time. We haven't been blown out in a really, really long time.

Sucks to lose so many that were so close, but I feel like all schools target LSU because of our 2000 decade.

Whatever happened to the LSU defense that used to kill game winning drives? There is obviously a huge problem with the defense stopping last minute drives, and it will continue to cost us these close games.

And what is that whisper?? In such a close razor thin fulcrum, what is it that makes one swing to the losing side?? That is the real question that needs to be asked about the entire program.

The converse to this is asking how many times LSU has dominated a game, only to have it be up for grabs late?

UT - 2005
UF - 2006 (LSU was pounding UF in the first half, and pissed away chances to score)
Ark. 2008
UGA - 2009
MSU - 2009
UT - 2010
UF - 2010
UNC - 2010
UF - 2012 (6-0 at the half with UF doing nothing on offense, and LSU blowing a shot to get a TD before the half)
Ark. - 2012
MSU - 2012
Clem. - 2012.
TCU - 2013

It's the yin and yang of Les. He rarely gets blown out, yet he rarely puts people away early. It's as if his philosophy is "do just enough to make it a game in the 4th." Big lead. Sit on it, we'll win it at the gun. Down two TDs. Fight like hell and give us a shot at the gun.

What about all of the wins that could have easily been losses to inferior opponents. See Ole Miss, Arkansas, and Auburn last year. I'm good with a win but we shouldn't be letting some of these teams hang around until the end.

For several years now, it seems we've lacked that killer instinct the defines "dynasty" programs. We take our foot off the gas (or off the opponent's neck) and wind up limping across the finish line, sometimes finishing second. I've never understood the concept of going conservative and then being surprised that the opponent didn't get the memo that we're supposed to win. It's frustrating.

It's a combo of several things as to why this one hurts and people are as pissed as they are.

1. Expectations-- without the expectation of contending for a title, fans would not be so upset. We had hoped for a championship, or at least a net improvement from last year. Odds are good we will be in a very similar situation as last year at best, which is disappointing given the monetary commitments in supporting this program.

2. The season is effectively over relative to expectations-- barring a miracle turn of events, even a win over Bama will not significantly help our situation. Likely, our peak is the Capitol One Bowl. Another CFA Bowl appearance is very legit possibility. Knowing this in October pretty much sucks.

3. Ways we lose-- you're right, we have been in every game, which makes it harder to deal with. In the case of Ole Miss, there is no excuse to lose that game. Giving up massive real estate on final drives the last 4 losses is pretty damn frustrating to watch. We've only really be smoked 3 times in Miles' tenure off the top of my head (SECCG UGA 05, UF 08, BCSNCG 11)...that's good, but also very frustrating to be so close and miss out.

4. Losing to inferior teams--contrary to popular belief, LSU does really well at WINNING games against inferior opponents. We make it far too close, but generally win. The last loss to an unranked team (at end of season) was Arkansas 08. It's only happened 4 times under Miles, 6 times since 2001...of course Ole Miss will likely make 7. Still, it's maddening when this happens.

5. Signs we are losing our edge--IMO, this is a prevailing opinion, be it true or not. LSU was basically a half step behind Bama, now there are legit reasons why that gap is widening and ATM, Ole Miss, and Auburn are closing quick.

6. It's Ole Miss--Awful bunch to lose to.

I feel bad because, as suck-arse as our defense has been this year, we were a victory over a reeling Ole Miss squad away from a Top 5 showdown with Bama playing for something significant.

I feel worse because, looking at next season, there's a plausible reason to believe we'll have significant deficiencies on both sides of the ball.
