There is no "other side of the coin" in this context....there was only one call in this situation: you go up 9 and make USC have to score twice (which they were not able to do).
Under absolutely no circumstance late in the 4th would you go for 2 and risk USC only needing one drive/score and 2pt conversion to tie it.
