I understand your point... but when you own the all time scoring record and this without the benefit of a 3 point line...

no.

and not just "own the record", but OWN the record. Pete averaged 44.2...2nd best is Oscar Robertson at 33.8. 10.5PPG higher than 2nd best, that is absolutely insane. I honestly can't think of any other record that is so far beyond what anyone else has done and is pretty much never going to be broken unless there's some major rule change.

We were down by four with little time left at Ole Miss, CJ went up for a three, hung in the air until the defender fouled him and he nailed the three and hit the FT. I was in awe.

Saw this happen at a high school game recently and I thought of that Ole Miss game. That 4-point play forced the game to overtime. Chris had 55 and Gerald Glass for Ole Miss had 53.

If I can get the refs to call fouls, then I'm going with Shaq. Sure, he couldn't hit the free throws, but the fouls would eventually catch up to the opposing team.

Heck, I'd take Shaq just on principle, alone.

....and 5 assists per game Pistol Pete is the obvious #1
That sure seems a little light. Only 5??

Pete couldn't drive the paint? Are you 12 yrs old? Pete scored, literally, from all over the court. Obviously you are not aware, because of your age, how tall Pete was, and back then, that was very tall for a point guard. As for defense, exactly who did CJ shut down? And I love CJ. His first home game, he put up 55 against Randy White from La. Tech's 51'ish. At Fla. he lit up the scoreboard for 50+ and had the gator fans standing & going wild the whole second half. But, sorry, Pete, by far.

Pete's before my time, but a quick look at his numbers and some highlights shows that he's OBVIOUSLY #1 at LSU, and very, very certain to be the best ever in the overall college field. Simply stated, many oldtimers have told me that his "highlights" were just random footage; examples of average gameplay from him, and not necessarily his best plays ever.
Factor in the lack of a 3 point line and shot clock, and he really jumps out. He would have likely averaged upper 50's here with current rules.

2nd best- I never saw Petit, again only his numbers to go by.
As for Shaq vs CJ- there is no comparison, CJ by a mile. Yes, Shaq was a presence, but if you put them on opposing teams, CJ would be a far greater factor. He wasn't just a set shooter, he was extremely fluid and unguardable at the college level. He embarrassed man-to-man, and shot over zones.

Even Shaq considers Chris Jackson better than himself. I don't buy it.
Shaq played with Chris, he would have a lot of insight into this.

Why do you not believe what he himself, says?

That was m freshman year as well. I lived in West Stadium dorm. Short walk to Assembly Center (wasn't called the PMAC yet). Kentucky game had us sitting 3 students to every 2 seats. Quite possible the loudest event I've ever attended. I didn't make the Ole Miss game that is the highest paid attendance game, can't imagine what that was like.

When u factor in the points per game being so high,, 5 assists per game is pretty darn good. Just shows that he didn't shoot the ball every time he touched it.

I'm not sure I agree that Pistol Pete was better than Chris Jackson, because they played during different eras. As basketball had evolved quite extensively from the time Pistol Pete played to the time Chris Jackson and Shaq played. Shaq at LSU was a manboy but he was still very raw.

Pete, Bob, Shaq then Chris.

CJ didn't even knew he fouled out of the LMU game. Streaky shooter - could win or lose the game and went for the kill every time - awesome to watch. Give Pete a three-point line and he averaged 55+ per game easily.

Shaq played for 3 years as opposed to Chris' 2, so Shaq (and Pettit) gets the edge.
