BR's The Advocate - "LSU will need Hess to be more on his game to get to the CWS. The WarHawks hammered (Hess) for three runs in the first inning and five overall...Concerns about Hess' effectiveness will stretch into the weeks ahead."

The Advocate reporter nails it! Hess's record was 7-6 with an ERA of 5.05 last year, hard to see how this makes him LSU's Friday night Ace. His best game was against Arkansas. Fans expressed similar concern about Giles as LSU's punt returner as it stretched into the weeks last year, it was hard to understand why he was still returning punts. Fans were melting over Orgeron's refusal to replace Giles at punt returner. Are we witnessing the same with Mainieri and Hess? Yes, we are!

Here's some of the melt from last night, courtesy of Pawwwl Mainieri.

Hess isn’t a starter. It’s been said many times but is true

I’m not going to overreact to this performance, but you can’t have the inconsistent Hess starting on Friday nights like you did last season. He needs to go to the pen if he doesn’t get better.

LSU's power hitting will be the only thing that improves Hess' W-L record from last year, it certainly won't be his ERA. PawwwL is just as hard headed as Orgeron and Miles, I dare anyone to say otherwise. Fans shouldn't expect any changes on Friday until it really hurts LSU, just like it did when Orgeron stuck with Giles. There are times LSU fans nail it. This is another one of those times.

We got some ppl in here that are miserable in the game of life. We are #1 in baseball, top 10 (hopefully next week) in basketball, and finished top 10 in football, and some still can’t stand to be positive.

While the concerns about Hess are legit, a lot of our fans went into freakout mode before the 5th inning last night. It wasnt a pretty win but it was game 1, and we continued the opening game win streak. There are kinks to work out, but our fans are just as hard headed when it comes to freaking out prematurely.

We play these early nonconference games to see what shakes out.

The rotation and lineup going into the Kentucky series will likely be different from what we're seeing this weekend.

PM didn't stubbornly start Hess last year, it was our best option early on. He was the best pitcher to end the season. If better options present themselves this season, PM will act accordingly. Hess will be given opportunities to regain his form but within reason.

Didn't Hess pitch really, really well this off season for USA baseball? Perhaps CPM saw something different in him then and believes he's the ace of the staff right now. Until we see that Hess has indeed not improved and that last night wasn't just a bad night, there's no proof that he's being hard headed on this one. IF Hess continues to struggle and IF CPM sticks with him THEN you can come to the conclusion that he's being stubborn.

Fans already know Hess isn't going to be the LSU's Friday night Ace. Why doesn't Pawwl? Why can't we see what shakes with LSU's talented and deep pitching? Forget Hess, he's our closer.

this. ok, I get that Hess can be frustrating at times but if anyone with a brain cell can't give PM the benefit of the doubt they should keep their thought to themselves. the guy knows what he's doing. Hess will regain his form in the near future. Or he won't. PM has other options if he doesn't.
