Are you so sure that they will send a pep band to Morgantown? I bet that they won't if Alleva has anything to say about it.

Bands are one of the most important experiences of an SEC game...and if that is the kind of atmosphere that Wash is trying to sell to its fans, then the (pep)band needs to go...maybe at their cost?

I know i'm not the only one to pose an obvious question here... but how can budget cuts have any affect whatsoever on the spending of the athletic department?

LSU's athletic department has been quite proud to talk up being completely self sustained (not supported by tax dollars from the state)... and that's probably a very good thing. But if state budget cuts in some way influence the spending of the athletic department have we been lied to?

Many reasons, but the main one being that the auxiliary payments that the AD makes to the University. It used to be 3%, but I believe it is now being upped to 5% given the University's current financial budget cuts. Basically, the athletic department pays X amount of dollars per year to the University, and that figure is being increased. Secondarily, expenses are always rising for various things due to inflation, etc.

Keep in mind, however, there was an 11% increase in revenues from fiscal year 2007 to fiscal year 2008 for the athletic department to the current $85 million in revenue.

So, while the athletic department is in fact self-sufficient in that it does not take any money from the University or the State, it does give money to the University.

The Department of Bands is a division of the College of Music and Dramatic Arts, so their primary funding does not come from the Athletic Department to begin with.

Correct, but when it comes to the Band's involvement in LSU athletics, the athletic department does in fact foot the bill, as they should ...

quote:

The LSU Athletic Department greatly values the band and its contributions to LSU. In fact, the Athletic Department provides more financial support to its band than any other school in the Southeastern Conference, spending over $900,000 annually in travel, salaries and equipment for the Tiger Band.

the band is funded by the athletic department... im in the band and i have been for a few years, its not a shock we weren't going to Washington, so i am not necessarily angry on the issue. We always have coaches and members of the athletic department come to practice and watch so i honestly think they just couldn't get everything in order to send the band up there. The only thing i have a problem with was not sending a full band to either Ole Miss or Alabama. We went to ole miss 2 years ago with no problems, other than ole miss students throwing broken glass bottles at us and one of our troopers screaming at the Mississippi troopers for not doing their job.
