North Texas has an actual trophy from winning the NIT championship last season. LSU last year, on the other hand, had one of its worst basketball seasons ever.

And we're going to demean this NIT matchup?

I just hope we win a game (or hopefully two).

It’s a consolation tournament with no big stakes. The potential benefit to LSU, however, was to help generate some interest in the program. Casual fans don’t know North Texas is a solid team. And I can guarantee you 95% of LSU basketball fans didn’t know NTU won last year until about 20 minutes ago.

People know the names Xavier, Ohio State, Minnesota, Iowa, Butler, etc. Most don’t know, or think North Texas is any good. And it’s not a matchup that is going to get many people to show up to a game on a work/school night that was just put on the calendar.

You can both want LSU to win and recognize it’s not a particularly intriguing matchup

Just continuing on criticizing the selection committee for this tournament. Wtf is a 16-17 Xavier doing in the NIT? They really fricked this tournament up.

LSU is a better team now than last November. And we're playing them at home-- feel good about our chances.

Do we yet know the date and time of the tipoff?

I feel good about our chances. I'm just cautiously optimistic.

No time yet but it's either gonna be Tuesday or Wednesday.
I'll post as soon as I find out the time

Is "Insufferable" the same as "Miserable?"

We all know that all of you Pump Nuts just love to spew out "Miserable" at the drop of a hat?

It wouldn’t surprise me if some other teams said no than the ones that did so publicly.

The NIT is a disappointment for most power conference schools. The organizers know that which is why they gave “auto bids” this year…many being declined.

LSU this year is in that rare sweet spot where they were so bad last season that the NIT represents an “accomplishment” rather than a slight/dissapointment.

LSU had no chance of getting into the NCAAT. So this is something to look forward to. OU, St. John’s and others are upset they didn’t get in the NCAAT. So their players/coaches don’t feel like practicing and traveling anymore to play in a tournament they don’t want to be in

The reasons vary. I know with Memphis, it isn’t just about recruiting. That was a team of hired guns and as soon as Mills went down for the season, defense went out the window and that’s the one thing Penny has been good at coaching. When this team gave a shite they could beat anyone, but that was maybe 30% of the time. 5-2 vs tourney teams and 4-1 vs the SEC and weren’t even on the bubble at the end because the players didn’t care.

The strange thing is, while Penny isn’t a great coach by any stretch, his strengths have been getting teams to buy into playing great team defense and to play with a high level of effort. They didn’t always play smart, but effort was never a problem before this season.

NIL changes everything.

Also, a developing team that should return several players is worth taking to the NIT. It can be a springboard to a bigger step next season. It’s good experience for a team like this one.

If it were a big name school, I’m fairly certain it would be known.
Xavier is a team that benefited from other teams declining invite, but they aren’t that bad. 64th in the net, 56 from Ken Pom. They had a brutal schedule this year and they didn’t win enough. 15 quad 1 games this year.

It's the NIT. Villanova is the only basketball brand name in it.
That's not true

The stated attendance was approximately 6,800.

But that game had more “juice” for a few reasons.

1. In-state rivalry

2. LSU was coming off of two disappointing seasons and there was some excitement in Wade’s first year.

3. The ULL coach was pissed LSU was hosting. Wade snapped back by saying ULL had a rinky-dink gym. So there was some clear animosity going into the game.

I’d be surprised if LSU can draw over 4k to the game (if that)

Why waste your time responding to the idiots who want to demean LSU playing in the NIT. These are the losers in life trying to justify their own failures. Just ignore them. Anyone not a moron knows there are brand names I the NIT.

Where did you see this? The ncaa website has the 3/19 but the game has no time. All other games have times noted. Figures….

Talk about a complete disappointment. North Texas is a solid team. But (1) LSU has already played them, and (2) the name won’t move the needle, AT ALL, for a likely home game. There might be 3K-4k people who show up for an unplanned game on a Tuesday night. No offense to NTU, but basically ANY bigger “brand name” would have been better

Or you could just stop whining and be happy LSU is playing postseason ball.

This team deserves fan support. They could have packed it in like some other big name teams, but they chose to play.
