Didn't TM7 get shoved into the band at the end of his punt return against Arky? It's probably but the only reason, but still a reason and a good one for PR.

Something that happened 5+ years ago doesn't pass the smell test PR-wise. The inevitable question would be "why didn't you implement the policy sooner?".

It could have been something they've kind of hated for a while, the band being that close, just waiting for something bad to happen. Finally pulled the trigger.

Playing devils advocate.

Athletic departments share money with the music department to make sure the bands show up. The money's in the budget. If they don't spend it, they'll lose it next year.

Had no clue. The snippets of the article in the OP didn't discuss any money going to JSU, so obviously that blows up my whole point.

That 3 doors down performance was better than any time I had to listen to and watch an opponent's halftime performance.

For the most part, I like two full bands in the stadium (other than Bama's trash), but I can't remember ever having paid attention to their halftime show.

This doesn't bother me at all, but I'm not hardcore one way or the other to the point of arguing against someone who is upset.

Pretty typical decision based on what LSU's chickensh**t Athletic Department is turning into.

For those who say they don't care, just remember that the next time some other game day tradition that makes college football such a special and unique experience gets taken away. Get ready for more piped-in music, more commercials bombarding you every second while the band has to sit on their hands. This is all coming from the bozos in the marketing department, who think that the sterile, generic atmosphere one finds at NFL games is the gold standard.

TigerCard gets it.

What makes CFB the best sport on the planet is tradition and identity. Marching bands and fight songs are a huge part of tradition. I may not like the other team or their traditions, but removing tradition from CFB is a bad move in the wrong direction.

Our Admin has become so (laughably) small.

BTW, if we're going to trot out some lame "safety" excuse, who really needs to be on the field? Players, coaches, trainers, and a handful of others. So before we remove bands, get all the other dead wood off the field and keep the bands.

IF there are REAL safety concerns, then what about the Alumni band, are we going to quit having them perform??

Only if Johnny Jones isn't hired as band director.

I personally thought Troy put on a phenomenal field show when they came. Which is tough to do in the cold

Didn't realize so many Tiger fans were also fans of other school's bands.

Odd.

What's odd about it? If the other band is good (or maybe even better), why can't I enjoy them?

No, the band was behind the white and TM7 was still in the endzone after his punt return and I took two steps into the endzone to celebrate with him.

This is too bad. Seeing other schools bands at college football is what makes college football so great. I loved seeing TAMU and the Alabama band and other bands come to Tiger Stadium.

It adds to it especially if you're watching on tv to hear the opposing fight songs from the bands.

Not to hijack the thread, but did Alleva ever apologize to those Duke students?

Do any other SEC schools have the policy? How about the major conferences?

In my initial post (on p. 5), I wrote about how this policy was actually put in place last year, and how the "Safety" issue was only brought up after Alleva's first excuse for not allowing the Auburn band to perform didn't fly. I neglected to delve into the backstory. Here it is:

A few years ago Alleva proposed at the SEC meeting that there would be no full band trips by any SEC school to an SEC game. His ulterior motive for this is that he wanted to cut out Tiger Band's travel budget. (For background, Tiger Band used to go to two away games per season through the early 80s. At some point in the mid-80s, this was reduced to one trip per season.) His proposal was pretty soundly defeated by the other ADs. He then offered a new proposal: each school's AD would have total control over what goes on at halftime. The other ADs went along with this, at least partially as a way to mollify him after his initial proposal was shot down.

The decision to prevent visiting bands from performing at Tiger Stadium is his way to achieve his initial goal. The idea is that if visiting bands aren't allowed in Tiger Stadium, other schools will similarly refuse to let Tiger Band perform in their stadiums. So he won't have to pay for a Tiger Band trip each season, AND he can blame it on other schools.

What kind of money are we talking about? The average full band trip for Tiger Band to an SEC game runs about $100,000. But, of course, if the full band doesn't go, a pep band is sent. A pep band trip runs about $30,000. So he saves roughly $70,000 if Tiger Band does not go to an SEC game. (Remember, the athletic dept. budget is well north of 100 million! Seventy thousand is a rounding error.)

But, wait....it gets better! In the years when LSU participates in one of these kick-off classic games (such as our opening game against Wisky this season), the financing is similar to a bowl game. In other words, LSU pays little or nothing for Tiger Band's travel to such a game. But Alleva counts such a game as Tiger Band's full band trip for the year, thus saving the money he would have spent if the band went to a crucial SEC game such as Bama or Auburn. Pretty slick.....

This is such a stupid new policy. Bands performing at halftime including the opposing team band has been a part of college football for decades. It has nothing to do with loyalty to the Tigers. This is just another ploy by Aleva to sell more seats and it certainly will mean that the Tiger Band will not be invited to other SEC away games. HOW STUPID !!!

One more thing about the so-called "safety" issue. Last year, you might recall that the alumni band performed with Tiger Band at the Eastern Michigan game on Oct. 3. At that same game, there were several hundred young cheerleaders who performed after the two bands. So the sidelines were packed with people, including a lot of young (middle school and high school) girls. Remember, this was AFTER the Auburn game, when Alleva suddenly had his epiphany about how unsafe it was on the sidelines for two college bands.

Here's a video of that show:

LINK

Who here is naive enough to think that such events will not take place in the future? Who thinks that the athletic department would hesitate for a second to allow several hundred young cheerleaders on the sidelines if they could make some money from it?

As I noted, that is exactly the goal. Alleva gets to cut out full band trips and blame it on the other schools.

"Funny" how they waited to fire the band director to make this decision. I bet he was OK with opposing bands at halftime.
