From LSU's perspective $6K is absolutely nothing. It costs LSU/TAF 2-3 times that for a single working day for Les Miles

If they want to do this story - they need to look at all of the recruiting videos being offered by different services.

Some of them are quite good - some of them are poor... but some access to information is better than none and without the ability of coaches to go and watch more high school football games? Every school without a sweetheart deal with the local high school is scrambling to identify prospects

Seriously OTL - if there is more money than that involved then OK run your story (if you show other schools and the value they receive for their packages). But would even one of your junior reporters be willing to truck his arse all over the place like Lyles did? For maybe 37K a year (25k from oregon + 12 from cal and lsu)? Really? Would you really pay for that much travel? He is pulling in a lower middle class or worse salary - the replacement cost if you let a coach do that is probably 75K-300K at many programs

And shite - what has Cal shown about what they got? Doesn't it seem like they are getting a complete pass?

It screams a parallel to UO. Just give us stuff so we can make the compliance guys happy.. It most likely isn't true, but Lyles incompetence makes it look just as bad..
nooooo that is inconsequential

/lecter

we asked him for specific player video. if he didn't edit out the players we didnt ask for the BFD.

swing your sword. ESPN sucks arse.

By my calculations, it is a little over 10% of the total volume provided. If over half was this way, I would say LSU has a problem. But given the already public disclosure of Schad's "revelation" by LSU in the press release last, this more a reflection on LYLES and OREGON and sensationalism on the part of the Media right now...

So if we didn't pay him any money until December 2010, then he wasn't "on the payroll" of LSU in October 2009 when he accompnied Seastrunk et. al. to the LSU/Florida game. So no secondary violation there.
Obviously we recieved videos from him prior to paying him, so no problem there.
So even if the videos aren't very useful, what are we supposed to do? Stiff him? I'm guessing that would be some sort of NCAA violation as well. Soliciting recruiting videos then refusing to pay for them or at least bad business.

Sounds like a whole bunch of nothing to me.

well both are big believers in making a story more sensational instead of more balanced

a hatchet job is better TV - a broader review of the college landscape would have been so unpleasant because it would invoke shades of gray and complexity

Yeah this article is all spin> We have always said some of the material is old players currently in college. But they completely want to ignore all the video that is useful because that doesn't make us out to be doing something wrong.

Nothing in this story says that.

Herb Vincent, LSU's associate vice chancellor for communications and senior associate athletic director, said in an email to ESPN last Thursday that "LSU began receiving materials in early October 2010 according to our coaches. Our computer records show that much of the video from the DVDs were loaded into LSU's recruiting evaluation system by mid-November 2010."

They are digging for dirt. The whole ESPN establishment is dedicated to showing that the SEC is corrupt and that is how they are outdoing the Big Ten/Pac-12. It doesn't make a lot of sense because of their TV deals, but when you consider that most of the employees of ESPN are Big Ten people, then you can see the ax they have to grind.

32 videos for $6,000 is around $200 per video. No big deal. That's actually a pretty good price. If what he gave was crap, so be it. He wasn't good at what he did. Are they going to assume motive? Are they saying that there was a hidden benefit? How is any of that provable?

Terrible reporting from ESPN, once again.

Couldn't have been too lucrative. His business went under and now he works in a grocery store. Maybe directly related to the crappy quality goods he was producing.

TBH, his current employment is what scares me the most. He may see a way to make a quick dime, and sell false stories to the sports media, who would pay well and fast.

This has all been reported. I read another article that cited the outdated video but also said the information that came with the videos was good and LSU's response was that was what they paid for anyway. It seems like OTL is just re-reporting things trying to seem like they broke the story. This has all been known for weeks.

As badly as we need a QB, I think we would've paid more than 6k for Mett.

I think it's all bullshite unless we find out Lyles received more money from LSU. IF he received more money, I'd say there's a good chance LSU was buying players and the videos were a cover. Unless someone finds the paper trail, this is a non issue. I think the way we handled the Hicks situation put us in good favor with the NCAA and that LSU's trouble is behind it unless something substantial (paper trail) can be proven.
