and a down year for the SEC. Outside of Alabama, every SEC team on our schedule was having a very bad year relative to 2014.

Do you not remember that Arkansas was ranked #3 going into the final game of the season?

Every offense constantly evolves during the season. Ours will do the same. Things will get better. I promise.

Jennings has already shown he can throw intermediate passes damn near perfectly. It's the short routes and routes over the middle I want to see more of.

Why not use games like ULM to break tendancies and work on the passing game? If ULM is stuffing 9 men in the box, why did we insist on running into that brick wall? The entire SEC knows that Les is not going to throw the ball until he absolutely has to, and it badly hurts our running game. The 2012 @ Florida game was a perfect example. That Florida team was not better than LSU, but they had a good punter pinning us deep, and Les refused to open up running lanes by passing the ball. About our only passing answer was throwing quick slants, but that does nothing to deter teams from stacking the box. If looking at 2013, we had much bigger running lanes because we were willing to throw the ball on early downs and thus teams were not as committed to jamming the box.

This is what scares me about top sec teams having the depth not like ULM, SHS,UW. It's frustrating to watch but it has gotten victories.

I think people are overestimating our defense. I agree that this is a good defense but it's nowhere close to that 11 d. The special teams while good is also no where near 2011. Point is they're are going to have to open it up a little more on offense to be successful in conference play.

We just watched LSU struggle to gain rushing yards for an entire half against ULM.
The problem I have with this part of your post is LSU was 3/8 on 3rd in 1st half while attempting 16 passes, yet 4/6 in 2nd half while attempting only 4 passes.

As Rantfan put it-
quote:

I agree on the strategy but after some point in the game its not working you have to change strategy.
This place would really liquefy if staff duplicated 1st half and only scored 20 vs "lowly" ULM.
I recall the hell raised about not rushing when Lee struggled mightily vs La Tech a while back.

In short, there's no pleasiing the Rant

The strategy did not work for three quarters of the Wisconsin game, but Les stayed with it and that worked out pretty good.

Seems like every year, this is the case. The defense bails us out.

controlled passing game.

9 to 10 in the box and anyone can stop the run. Wisconsin did that with fair bit of success before they ran out of gas. Alabama, Auburn, Texas A&M, Ole Miss will not. Besides we do not have Jeremy Hill, Stevan Ridley, or Spenser Ware. For that matter Jacob Hester.

pound our running game

Been hearing this for the past 10 years.

And how did that turn out? You absolutely have to have a decent passing game to win the SEC. Not an awesome passing attack, but you have to make the defense respect your passing game. Otherwise, 21-0.

I think he means that LSU beat most of those teams on the schedule while showing a pulse in the passing game with one quarterback. Once that qb was out of the picture, and the passing game was non-existant... 21-0.

Miles summed it up in his post game presser. We have significant advantages on the defensive side and disadvantages on the offensive side of the ball. The priority is to eliminate turnovers and take the ball away. pound our running game and controlled passing game. if we do that it gives us the greatest chance to win every game on our schedule.

its not sexy and it won't light up the sportscenter highlights but it is the proven recipe for a team with this makeup to win

We were playing ULM.
Look, I'm ok with it now, and Les has proven again and again that he's better than I thought he was after his first few years here; HOWEVER, this game was more proof that Les is not about getting the most out of his team's abilities, maximizing their performance on the field, or putting a spectator-friendly product on the field. He is about minimizing the number of losses he sustains. And no, that's not the same thing as getting the most out of his team.

That strategy won't win the big games against, Auburn, Bama, and FLA/Tam.

As an old respected Louisiana high school football coach told me. " if I had Brock Berlin, I wouldn't run the veer". The offense is based on what the players can learn and run.
