+1 on the rings.

I work in the upstream O&G industry and it is FULL of Aggies. Many don't even know eachother, but start up converations at social functions at the mere sight of another ring.

why do they have to practice yelling?

If you really do want to know, I'll answer.

It's not practicing yelling, but practicing our yells. It began around the time of WW1. We have about a dozen different yells, each with their own hand signals. The Yell Leaders give the signal, which is then "passed back" through the three decks. On the Yell Leaders' count, the entire student section does an organized yell.

Yell Practice is sort of a pep rally in that the coaches and players sometimes show up to pump up the fanbase. The Yell Leaders tell lame jokes/stories. Then we go through some yells. Then the lights go out and you kiss your date.

Our stadium is about a 5 minute walk from the bar area, so usually on a Friday night you stumble over, have some fun, then go back to the bars.

As far as why any visitor would want to go, I just refer back to my previous post about wanting to hear LSU's traditions. Traditions and quirks and pageantry are part of what make CFB so damn awesome.

You think Koresh and the Branch Davidians would have moved their compound to College Station instead of Waco. Their membership would have increased significantly.

Amen brother! FWIW, I respect Aggies a hell of a lot more than I do the future Ribeyes over in Austin.

Likewise. But we're really not giving either of ourselves very high praise in that comparison.

Nice job Aggiegirl. You have got a ton of A&M information stored in that brain of yours.

I was in school when we played A&M every year and, to be honest, I flat-out hated them. I mean I hated RC Slocum, I hated Jackie Sherrill, I hated the wrecking crew, I hated Bucky Richardson, I hated Leland McElroy, I hated the yell leaders, I hated the fans and God knows I hated that damn band.

I can't quantify why, but I have a changed my opinion of the Aggie Nation. I guess I have mellowed with age. I now enjoy the A&M traditions as one of the really great things about college football; not their players or their team, but the fans, the yells, and {gulp} the band. Additionally, they are an incredible academic institution and I would be proud if one of my kids went to school there.

God help me, but I can't believe I just said that.

What does that have to do anything? "Yell Practice" is for the fans, attended by the fans. That is your doing. Sorry for pointing out the obvious, but it is very cult like. By the way, I'm sure numerous A&M players have had their fair share of run ins with the law.

The yells have been around since WW1. The fans have not.

Anyways, I think you're reading too much into the word "practice." It's not a serious practice, it's just a tradition...something fun to do. You run into other students, opposing fans, old alumni, see the coach and listen to him get ya all riled up.

So it is essentially a pep rally? Just out of curiosity, is booze served or available at this event?

David Koresh and Midnight Yell have nothing in common. Traditions =/= Cults.

The difference is ours are no longer on the team. Yours is a Heisman candidate.

To push a little more.

We as the 12 man have a role in the game just like the players do. We contribute through our "yells". Hence the "practice" aspect of it. We get together and practice each one to make sure everyone knows what to do.
