Maintaining a Championship Level Program is getting tougher

Since the 2004 season, it appears that our talented underclassmen are leaving the program at the first opportunity to do so.
Les Miles have his coaching flaws, but this trend has rocked the program far worse than Les inept ability to develop a decent QB.

what hurts is most of them just aren't ready.
no one faults a beckham or landry, guys who dominated their positions.
what hurts is we don't even get one good year out of some of these players. I mean they are solid contributors, but they aren't anything special.
it's sad that most are too immature to understand that they aren't mature enough to leave.
we don't blame them for taking the money. I hate the nfl. one of the reasons I don't watch it anymore.

Les created this problem himself. He selling these kids on three years and gone to the NFL but it's hurting our program more than it's helping. We will never have any experienced depth if this trend continues.

I'm not buying this excuse.
At least for college football (as opposed to basketball), you know you'll have a guy for 3 years. If a guy redshirts, he may only play 2 years, but at least coaches know the timeline and can plan their recruiting accordingly.
Does it hurt? Of course, but good coaches have to anticipate it.

Agree. And until something changes it's going to be more and more of a problem NCAA-wide.

LSU is no longer a program that wins championships in either football or basketball. We're now known as a stepping stone for guys who want to leave early. The word's out....go to LSU and you'll make the pros. You won't win anything as team but who cares?

I'm sure that we all realize this Truth: the minor leagues and the minor league players for the NFL reside in the major college football programs.
Major League Baseball have minor leagues, teams and players that are overtly labeled "minor league." The sport of football doesn't. The college teams are the minor leagues for the NFL.
The main difference is that the baseball minor league players are paid for their work. College players play for free tuition and no pay.
If the NFL had REAL minor leagues like Major League Baseball, what percentage of these "student athletes" would skip school and play for pay in the NFL minor leagues? Probably about 90 percent would ditch school and play for pay with some minor league pro football team.

Better question ... if they're not ready, why are almost all of the recent early departures drawing NFL pay checks, and most of them holding down starting jobs?
Maybe the problem is with LSU fans being selfish twats thinking these players owe them something.

Kentucky basketball does not seem to have this problem. We are not the only program losing kids early to the draft. The next man needs to step up considering he was probably a highly rated recruit anyways.

It's getting tougher because power conference schools now have access to enough money that everyone has the most badass facilities.

You are really comparing a 5 man rotation in basketball to a 22 player rotation in football with multiple more spots in ST's? Basketball can dominate with a single player or recruit making the transition far simpler.

If you don't see how having NFL rosters littered with former Tigers helps LSU, I can't help you. But I wasn't even addressing whether or not it was beneficial to LSU, I thought the discussion was about the readiness of each player entering the league.
If an NFL team is willing to pay you to take up a roster spot, you're considered ready by the only group whose opinion matters.
