hmmm....KINGFISH...Naaa....Louisiana ICEGATORS....Yea!... Miss some good southern hockey. And the fights! I think both teams in total faught more during games then any other echl teams. LSU hockey would be nice though.
Fighting in college hockey is practically non-existant. Sure you may get a fight once in awhile, but fighting in college hockey is rare and players who drop gloves and fight are suspended. You still get hard checks and some shoving but that's about it. College Hockey is a world away from the trashy ECHL.

As long as it is self supporting--enough blood-suckers

Well, Roscoe, I have to say, you would be quite suprised at the turn out we were getting towards the end of last season.
We definately started a pretty nice fan base going into next season. If you aren't a fan of the sport, it's actually quite interesting to see how many people show up just to see "LSU" play anything. Also, the yanks at LSU come out of the woodworks

Good healthy conversation about hockey...AND LSU! It may not be a Varsity sport - EVER - but at least it is making its way into the LSU fabric.
I live in Kansas and KU has a hockey team. They practice/play in a KC suburb. I was quite shocked when I showed up for a game last year and the bleachers were nearly full!
If you don't think it can work at LSU, other strong ACHA programs are Iowa State and Arizona!!! While there is quite a bit of hockey (believe it or not) in Iowa (several Junior hockey teams where many D-1 schools get players) there isn't nearly the amount in Arizona but yet, they still have a strong program.
If Kentucky can move up and play D1 or D3 varsity (there is no longer any D2 hockey), good for them. Growing the sport is the important aspect of all of this.
Hockey may not be growing at the same pace it was a few years ago, but it is still growing!

What sport do you think would draw more, ice hockey or soccer? Given the choice, I would easily choose going to see a hockey game over a soccer game.

being a norther, (from philly), i love the idea of the hockey team joining an SEC league . now that i will have a car at school i plan on attending all home games and any away ones i can. hockey is my passion and i miss it while at school! as to all those posts complaining that we won't be varsity, we won't want to be. the d-1 school such as minnesota, north dakota, boston college, michigan state, denver, etc would destroy us and it is better to start the sport slow and ease is into the hearts of the entire LSU community.

quote:A little bit of both. Kind of a shame actually because I think a men's soccer team would become the fifth most watched sport at LSU behind the big three and women's basketball. There is plenty of talent in state and in Texas every year to field a damn good team.
would love to see LSU field a men's soccer team...what is the hold up? Is Title IX about teams or scholarships?

Well, there's a Junior A team that gets most of it's players from team USA southeast, which then play around until they pick up a college offer or a bid to go pro.... Louisiana had 5 guys at one time playing on this Junior A team. And NO, the team didn't suck, they dominated for a while the last I heard from players
For those of you who don't know, Junior A is like a minor hockey league that funnels kids into the pros.

When you consider that soccer would potentially have a lot more local players who are talented and can play on a high level than ice hockey, I think you have to give it to soccer.
There are also existing facilities on campus for soccer, so you wouldn't have to factor in that cost. You might need to add seats to the stadium, though. They probably should anyway, considering that the women's games have sold out of seating during the past few years on at least several occasions. The facilities that the ice hockey club team plays in are not located on campus, and the seating couldn't be easily expanded from what I can tell.
That's not a knock on the club ice hockey team or anything. I just think that men's soccer would be more able to draw numbers than ice hockey at this point.

Junior League A players are considered amateurs by the NCAA and thus can go to College. It's misleading to call it a minor league funnelling kids to the pros. It's a step below the OHL, WHL, QMJHL, which can be considered a minor league. Players get drafted from these leagues to play in the NHL. Basically if you've got talent and you're in your late teens to early 20s in North American Hockey and potential for the NHL you either play college hockey (WCHA, CCHA, Hockey East, etc.) or play in the OHL, QMJHL, or WHL.

Junior A is for the best of the best between the ages of 16-20ish. There aren't any rules on players coming out of high school going to the pros so thats where teams look first. Kids can get drafted and still play college, I forget how that works, its like a lotto deal. But hockey isnt like football in the way that college is the big show before the pros.
And as for the OHL, AHL, ECHL, etc. Those are all guys that didn't/couldn't make the transition between Juniors A-college- pros or junior A-pros. Hockey is wide open as to where players all generate from, but the best in the last few years have either came from over seas or from the Junior A level, minus crosby who came out of a sports academy...which is the hockey evangel, west monroe, etc
