Many LSU students have gone to school now for 4-5 years never even knowing the South side of the building.

They didn't start the Union Renovations until the Fall of 2006...but nice try.

west laville is in process of being renovated. east laville is still a shite hole and I don't know if there are any plans in the works to renovate in the near future.

I'm pretty sure the Union Parking lot has been closed longer than late 2006.

Fix Middleton

Fix the Pentagon, and Laville dorms, and some of the quad classrooms.

Then worry about the band. As far as I know, they have good facilities already

Good facilities for a HIGH SCHOOL band. Ever been in the LSU band room? Just not big enough for a band the size of LSU's. It's the same one without change that been in place since the early 70's at least and it was too small THEN.

according to my sports marketing prof, they are a pretty good asset in research paper

in all seriousness, i've had to several times, middleton sucks facility wise but this campus is way behind in its renovations in a lot of facets

They renovated the Union in the mid-90s. Redid the dining services there added Chik-fil-a and added a McDonald's. I missed the old dining set-up where you could get a Bengal Burger.

I'd say fix the bandhall first, simply because it's easier to do it.

Middleton would have to be a huge renovation. They'd probably have to move it out of the Quad altogether to do it right. Unless they went up a few stories, which would fit in with the scale of the other buildings.

The Daily Reveille - May 3, 2009

quote:

Though considerable progress has been made in the Student Union construction, officials still don’t expect the project to be fully completed until March 2011. The original March 2010 construction deadline has been delayed multiple times.

Keep on pushing back!

I think the band hall is a needed idea, and the funding was matched by the state and came largely from TAF and people wanting it to go to the band only.

I would like to see Kirby Smith gutted and turned into suite-style dorms (this is what EVERY school is building now). The Laville's need it and will get it. In reality, ALL the dorms need to be improved. I'd love to have them all gutted and re-done or simply torn down.

Tiger Stadium needs to be fixed up, no doubt.

Other campus landmarks -- think the greek theater and Huey P Long -- all need repairs.

Not to mention academic buildings -- it'd be cheaper to re-build Atkinson Hall but it's on the historic registry or something. Look at Lockett - it's a hole that need a lot of help.

Budget cuts may affect deferred maintenance
quote:

The University has a backlog of deferred maintenance projects totaling $220 million — an amount likely to balloon even higher with the impending budget cuts for next year. The $220 million total only includes deferred maintenance for academic buildings, the LSU School of Veterinary Medicine, the Paul M. Hebert Law Center and the LSU Laboratory School. Buildings that generate their own revenue like the residence halls, Tiger Stadium and the Student Union have separate deferred maintenance lists.

the reason is because most years there is no money given to LSU in the capital outlay bill. $0 for new stuff, 0$ for current maintenance. the money to fix a leaky roof or broken water main or busted tile all comes out of the operating budget, which then cuts the academic mission.

so then it is either wait until the state can sell bonds for your projects (again, not often for LSU except for emergencies) or get the revenue yourself (band hall) or get the students to pay (union theater).

ETA: the band hall is actually TAF funds with $5mil matched by the state.

Renovating the Union was a terrible idea in the first place. It should've been torn down and replaced by a new one. It isn't kind to the eyes. And when time comes to renovate or replace Middleton, I hope they replace it.

In all seriousness, what is the point of the library these days? Wouldn't it be more prudent to move to digital resources, that don't require all the space for books? With everything moving online, what can be done at the library that can't be done online (at least in the future)?
