Stovall's numbers reflect the way the game was still being played at the time. He might have won the Heisman in 1962 if LSU had beaten Ole Miss and if there had not been several other good players from the SEC in contention.

No, I understand. I still think Hilliard was at least a comparable LSU overall "star", such that it seems weird attributing the number only to Stovall.

I wish they would not retire anyone's jersey, and bring back #20 and #37

Same for the Saints and #8

No one player is too good to ever have their jersey number worn by someone else for all eternity. Besides, where would it end?

Yeah I'm not happy about this.

According to Dellys clarification, the number isn’t being retired. Which is weird

I don't have any issue Stovall getting honored but I would like to see Kevin Faulk, Booger McFarland, and Glenn Dorsey get honored as well. But good for the University for honoring Stovall and I hope the others come soon.

Such a great Tiger and he has to have his legacy at LSU celebrated during a losing season under the worst coach in program history.

Ummm... Stovall is not getting honored with Curley as the coach.

Faulk has to be next. I thought for sure he would, Stovall is certainly deserving too though.

LSU no longer retires numbers. The only football number that is officially retired is 20. 37 was unofficially retired by Miles after Karnell Hatcher graduated because he was still wearing it when they retired Casanova's jersey.

Retiring jerseys still allows the number to be used.

When you go from thread to thread with this same, tired, BS, you are worse than the extreme negatigers you keep complaining about. Give it a break.

RIGHTTTT... the lone ranger who is tired of all the BS is worse than the hundreds of people who are negative all the time?? GTFO. Sorry you don’t agree with me, but I’m not going to ‘give it a break’

Besides, there’s no point... you post positive shite, and you’re met with rebuttal from the crowd that is negative all the time.. you post negative shite, and you’re met with a rebuttal from the people who are positive.. everyone on this board has basically picked a side, and I’ve chosen mine, so if you don’t like it, that’s your problem, not mine.. sorry I won’t fall in line with everyone else who thinks it’s cool to shite on LSU, no matter what the state of the program is

I was fine with the ones before and I think Stovall certainly deserves his name to be in the ring of honor on the stadium like those...but you cannot do 21 without Dalton Hilliard as well. Why not both?

Old folks think of Jerry Stovall. Finishing second in the Heisman should have been enough but add in everything else he did and man he really deserved this recognition.

Story I've always heard is that Stovall should/would have won the Heisman but politics (!) did him in because he followed so soon after Cannon. He played both ways, and punted for 40+ avg too. Not too shabby.

I see Faulk and Dorsey as potential retirees as well.

I feel Like prominence of the # is a factor. You can’t retire like 7. Idk

What about number 4?
During his college career Alexander set nine SEC records, tied another and set 27 LSU records. He finished his LSU career with 4,035 rushing yards—over 1,500 yards more than the Tigers' previous career rushing yards leader.[9] His 1,686 rushing yards total and 153.3 yards per game in the 1977 season stood as LSU single-season records until the 2015 season, when both were surpassed by Leonard Fournette.[10][11]

I mean I think Alexander at #4 has set himself apart from all other #4, and he set himself apart from all other players as far as career accomplishments.

He had a strong argument

As a person, probably the best human being to ever put on an LSU jersey. The way LSU treated him, after he came to its rescue after the death of Bo Rein, was terrible. But Coach Stovall holds no bitterness and is a humble, thankful guy.

I didn't say whether I agree or disagree. My point is, you do the same shite in every thread. This isnt a bash O, or pro O thread. Hell its not even a pro/anti anything thread. Yet, you quickly bumped in with your same tired old garbage, in a thread its not needed.

Under a provision of the LSU jersey retirement bylaws established Jan. 1, 2007, the retirement of an athlete’s jersey in a particular sport does not preclude a current student-athlete in that sport from wearing the jersey number in that or any other sport, subject to the discretion of the head coach. This provision applies only to jerseys retired after January 1, 2007. The numbers worn by Maravich, Pettit, O’Neal, Cannon and Bertman may never again be worn by future student-athletes in their respective sports.
