Does this mean the number is retired? I'd hate to lose 21 for future players, that's a badass number

From the link

quote:

Under a provision of the LSU jersey retirement bylaws established Jan. 1, 2007, the retirement of an athlete’s jersey in a particular sport does not preclude a current student-athlete in that sport from wearing the jersey number in that or any other sport, subject to the discretion of the head coach. This provision applies only to jerseys retired after January 1, 2007. The numbers worn by Maravich, Pettit, O’Neal, Cannon and Bertman may never again be worn by future student-athletes in their respective sports.

I know he played both ways and received accolades as much for defense as offense, but he had 5 total touchdowns in his career and barely over 1000 yards total rushing. Hilliard had 50 and 4000.

Always tough to compare player from the 60's with a player in the 80's. However, Stovall finished 2nd in Heisman race. Any other LSU player not named Cannon finish that high?
ETA-- and many believed he should have won.

great choice, at various times punted, kicked fg and extra points, returned kicks, caught passes etc. and a very good man from all indications, always tough to compare, because Hilliard was awesome and did many things other than rush (recall the 1985 Vanderbilt ko return) how about Eric Martin, left LSU as SEC wr yards leader, also was rb as freshman and is the last LSU Tiger to return a KO for a TD in Tiger Stadium (1981) and Kevin Faulk for sure...

What kind of bullshite is this?

Stovall went 0-7 in the SEC in his last season.

You don’t think he deserved to be fired?

I'd like to say I'm shocked Old thought he won the Heisman, but he's wrong about most other things...no reason to be shocked about this one.

It’s a shame we haven’t retired an African American’s jersey yet.

He might have won the Heisman in 1962

If not for the politics of the award. He was waaaayyyy better than the eventual winner who ended up as a top 10 nfl bust.

My dad and uncles said he was better than Cannon on defense and about as good as Cannon as a RB.

For those wondering if a "retired jersey" meant no one could ever again use "21", see the following from the article:

"Under a provision of the LSU jersey retirement bylaws established Jan. 1, 2007, the retirement of an athlete’s jersey in a particular sport does not preclude a current student-athlete in that sport from wearing the jersey number in that or any other sport, subject to the discretion of the head coach. this is a fact. The voting was 707 to 618. You ever get dog Terry Baker? He played in the final four as a point guard. No doubt he was a great athlete, but was also popular because of his multiple sports.
