LSU Hoops (10-3) vs. Virginia (12-1) | 6PM Mon| PMAC | TV: CSS (Cox ch 4)

LSU goes up against #23 UVA in the PMAC on Monday January 2nd. This is the final non-SEC game of the season for the Tigers and they look to add to their resume going into the heart of their schedule. This UVA is ranked in the top 10 in most defensive categories, but have yet to face many really good teams. They were able to beat Michigan this season, but haven’t beat another good team and lost to TCU. Just as LSU has been holding teams under 60 points lately, UVA has done so in 12 of their 13 games this season. I see that continuing in this game, but that doesn’t mean this won’t be an exciting game. Ken Pomeroy, statistical analyst, has this game as the most exciting game of the day.

This team plays their 3 guards almost the entire game but will bring in a few extra post players. They have been using big 2nd half runs to defeat their opponents so it will be key to not allow a big run for this team.

Starters:

Jontel Evans PG (5’11” 190 Jr) – 6.2PPG, 3.3APG, 53%fg, 60%3pt

Joe Harris G (6’6” 202 So) – 12.9PPG, 3.8RPG, 46%fg, 83%ft

Sammy Zeglinski G (6’1” 185 Sr) – 9.6PPG, 2.9APG, 42%3pt, 83%ft

Mike Scott F (6’8” 242 Sr) – 16.3PPG, 9RPG, 62%fg, 80%ft, 43%3pt

Assane Sene C (7’0” 239) – 5.3PPG, 4RPG, 50%fg, 66%ft

As a team: 67PPG, 34RPG, 13APG, 47%fg, 73%ft, 35%3pt

Stopping Mike Scott and not allowing second chance points needs to be top priority. UVA likes to keep the pace slow and play half-court offense. I think the best way to attack these guys is to get out fast after rebounds and push them. With that being the case, look for a lot of Chris Bass who has been great at pushing the tempo. As long as we rebound and play solid defense we have a very good chance to beat our second ranked team.

UVA played very poorly in their last game vs. Towson. They pulled out a victory but only won 57-50. On the road, they were losing to Seattle and Oregon at half, their only true road games, but were able to make big runs in the second half. The best thing they have been doing is limiting offensive rebounds, so if LSU can crash the offensive boards LSU could be looking at a good result. Attacking Mike Scott with our Power Forwards may be the best way to slow his offense down. He has been very good this year and a key to the game.

Prediction: LSU 63 Virginia 55

This would be a huge win for LSU! This game scares me, a lot!

Im pretty optimistic. UVA hasn't really played much good competition and I think we can run them out of the building. They don't have near the depth LSU has and they have kept teams from scoring by not giving teams many possessions. I think if we run we can score some on these guys.

Great work as usual SouthofSouth ! Happy New year to you and your family.

Mike Scott seems to be the engine that moves their train as you pointed out. You would not expect less from a veteran who apparently can light it up from 3pt. land (43%).

I would have expected a higher ranking from a one loss team so it is going to be interesting how UVA handles the Tigers on the road.

3 or their starters shoot 80+% from the charity stripe so their end game seems adequate.

LSU being at home and building confidence with a motivation to prove something to everyone, I like LSU winning the game by 6

LSU 62 UVA 56. I concur with your score South of South. Low scoring defensive battle.

Bennett and Trent know each other well from Pac-10 days but I think Trent has added some wrinkles to his system this year that Bennett may not have seen from his Stanford teams.

I, as you, think we'd be well served to push for some early offense.

As with Marquette, I think Turner will be the key. We'll need him to score to compliment our inside guys.

Will Stringer play?

From what I've heard, he has been cleared to practice, but not to play games. As much as I'd like to think he is gonna play I'd say he is probably only about 15-20% chance he plays.

If they manage to pull this one off too, LSU will have quite a pre-conference resume built

3/7. Not too much of a deep threat.

Besides Michigan, they have beaten nothing. So people still have their doubts, as I have myself. I could see the train falling of the tracks in ACC play.

LSU was pumped for the Marquette game. I am not sure if the same excitement will be there for this one or not. If so look for the Tigers to come out playing super hard. Im excited for some great ball. Im hoping for 6k actual fans or so.

U-verse doesn't have CSS. Your best bet is if the game is somehow not blacked out on espn3
