LSU President F. King Alexander said Wednesday that the school’s search for a tiger to become Mike VII continues, with the goal to have a new live mascot on campus by the time football season starts in September.

Alexander said renovations to the tiger’s on-campus habitat are expected to be completed by Aug. 10.

“We have some leads,” said Alexander, who spoke briefly at the Baton Rouge Rotary Club meeting with football coach Ed Orgeron at Tiger Stadium. “Finding a tiger is not the problem.”

He added that the tiger LSU chooses has to be young and physically fit to enhance his chances of having a significant reign as its mascot. Alexander said there are only about 4,000 tigers in the wild around the world.

Alexander said LSU is partnering with Auburn, Missouri and Clemson — schools whose sports teams are all nicknamed Tigers — to try to double that number.

quote:

“We have a responsibility to educate people about tigers,” he said.

Alexander said LSU is in the process of being accredited as a tiger sanctuary. “There are sanctuary groups around the country who take tigers from bad situations and put them in better ones,” he said.

“We have a school of veterinary medicine here. We took Mike (VI) for two radiation treatments at Our Lady of the Lake.”

Am I mistaken or did he already say we had a Tiger lined up a couple months back? Did that fall through or did I hear fake news?

I feel like they should've done this as soon as they got Mike I.

Sounds like a typical LSU hire. They give themselves plenty of time to find a replacement, fart around most of the time and then rush to hire somebody at the last minute.

If they do this will they possibly start breeding in order to do this,

I have full faith that F King will not be able to get if done in time. Can't believe he killed the tiger in the stadium tradition.

Yup. I half expect them to hire Coach O for the job. He's gonna look silly in a tiger costume.

Would love to see LSU take in multiple tigers and give them a great environment to live and breed.

Why would a tree-hugger/conservationist not want this to happen when there are only a few thousand tigers in the wild?

From what I've read, that was going to be about the only way having a another tiger would be acceptable, given the political climate

Just don't bring in Hugh Freeze to run the breeding program.

That's such a bullshite answer. Mike is treated better than any tiger in existence. Regular feeding of high quality food, medical care and a beautiful living habitat. F King would catch a little heat from some liberal pussy groups but he would be able to get a tiger.

I was at the rotary meeting today and this is not at ALL what he said

He wouldn't answer the question and everyone laughed. He only said when the habitat would be ready.

These quotes make it seem like they've narrowed down their options and Dr. Baker is probably just doing his due diligence on the tiger's health, genetic background, personality, etc.

I wouldn't freak out too much.
