LSU D-Line through week 7

I'm unable to follow the games as closely as I'd like. TV makes it very difficult to look at substitutions compared to being at the game.
I hesitantly pose this topic to the rant:
1) What are your overall thoughts on the D-line so far. Specifically what are Steele and Coach O doing with the talent as it fits into the D as a whole.
2) Who are the biggest positive surprises.
3) How deep are we consistently going at the DE and DT positions? (regular rotation- not a play here and there)
Please feel free to add any other thoughts on this topic.

The D-Line has been a pleasant surprise this year. Lewis Neal is an absolute stud. We are finally getting some production from Gilmore and Herron and building that depth at DT. Bower is back and Key is going to be special.
Has Deondre Clark played this year?

They've improved a ton at stopping the run. They play their gaps well and are able to adjust to pulling guards, zone blocking, man blocking, etc on the fly. The pass rushing by Key, Bower, Neal, Godchaux, etc has been outstanding. Coach O will continue to develop them into the NFL players they can be.

I always heard that Bain was the ring leader of the screwup underperforming D-line (Bain, Herron, Gilmore). With him gone and Coach O in town the improvement has been night and day.

I think they actually did a great job at containing Harris. he rarely got outside. The stunts that O and Steele have the D-line running are a thing of beauty

The pressure from the d-line is what won that game late. It allowed us to drop more DBs, and Harris cracked under the pressure. Tiger Stadium did its job as well

He and Chark are in Mile's doghouse eating Kibble & Bits.
Clark might leave after this year.

Four guys playing at DT, three guys playing at DE.
Those seven are playing great, and barring injury are enough.
The surprise to me is how little playing time Quenten Thomas is getting at DT and Teuhema and Clark are getting at DE.
Our starting four are bordering on greatness. Bower and Neal are killing it at DE, and Godchaux and LaCouture are sealing off the middle. They are backed by some outstanding linebackers.

Coach Orgeron does not tolerate poor work ethic. He demands excellence from his guys and if you don't hustle on the practice field you won't play in the games. Guys like Godchaux, LaCouture, Herron, Gilmore, Key, Bower, and Neal are all hustlers who do the right thing in practice. The guys that Coach Orgeron brings in will be that same type of player as he won't tolerate bullshite.

quote:Monumental difference. O has brought back a fire. The only issue is our depth. It has shown in the 4th quarter. That's due to bad recruiting. Coach O is killing it on the recruiting trail so this issue will be short lived.

DE- Lewis Neal plays about 85% of the snaps. Arden Key recently began starting but Bower subs in frequently. Teuhema has also gotten significant pt.

The one thing I have noticed is that Godchaux hasn't really had his name called as much after the first few games. Also, Lacouture is seemingly nonexistent. Perhaps he is more of a space eater that draws double teams. Those types of guys are often like a shut down corner in that plays run away from them intentionally.
Arden Key was a nice surprise early in the season, but Lewis Neal has turned into an absolute beast. His size reminds me a lot of Tyson Jackson.

They need to move key around more. He's a mismatch nightmare.

Key stands up at the line a lot. He is still pretty raw, but I'm surprised with how well he plays for a true freshman.

much has been made of the lack of depth but, those guys were in the fla backfield even at the end of the game. i honestly saw something towards the end i felt like i had never seen before, the fla o line looked gassed. they looked like what a tired d line looks like at the end of the game. i swear, our d line wore them out.

quote:i thought they were inconsistent at this. chief beat manziel because he played contain. the d line did not really do that against fla. they got after it every play until the end. granted, they did a lot to disrupt fla's offense timing but, harris did get free quite a bit and made some incredible plays.

quote:to me, this is the biggest difference. in the past, we had 2 or 3 super talented guys that often played at a high level. this year, it's a group of guys playing like a pack of wild animals who have been just let out of cage after not being fed for a week. it's a thing of beauty. they are flat out blowing plays up. o is a madman who you want on your side. the success the d line is having is direct proof of how brilliant he is about coaching d line.
O has brought back a fire.

"Subs in Herron Bain and Gilmore."
That seems like it might be difficult to do with one off the team.
