A few comments from the game from my perspective.

-The crowd showed up in FULL force tonight, super impressed. However, I am sort of upset with how dull it is until the last 5 minutes of the game. It's up to the players to give the crowd something to cheer about, but maybe the crowd could liven up the players? I don't know, it just doesn't seem loud until crunch time.

-Simmons battled with sickness all week (rumors of the flu).

-There are multiple threads giving props to players for winning this game, and of course shitting on Simmons. Listen, we don't win that game without Gray tonight. We don't win without Victor. We don't win without JP. We don't win without Hornsby. We don't win without Blakeney. And we sure as Hell don't win without Ben Simmons. This was a TEAM victory.

-Why can't LSU fans be happy we won? Was it pretty? Nope. Did we miss FT's? Yep. Were we screwed by the refs? Yep. Did we have some brain lapses on defense? Of course. Did we win? SURE AS HELL DID!!! 4-1 IN THE SEC

-Lastly, Ben Simmons is LSU's best player. Victor played great and dirty tonight. Gray was an elite PG tonight. Keith and AB hit some big shots. But Ben Simmons had a bad game and grabbed 18 rebounds, 16 points, 3 assists and he is the one who stole the ball at the end and AB ended up with it. People...Brothers, he and Victor got 30 rebounds together, we ended with 37. Victor got 6 offensive rebounds and several came from Simmons driving. Simmons fouled out Thompson almost solely himself, and Miles played 8 minutes and got 4 fouls because Simmons got him in so much foul trouble. My point is this...even when Simmons doesn't shoot well or has too many turnovers, he doesn't play like shite. He and Victor missed the same amount of shots, got same amount of points, but Simmons got 18 boards. Let's not shite on him just because we want 20/20 every game. Everyone here is blinking and missing the best player in college basketball in the last several years.

Great report, el Captain. What a big TEAM win tonight. But I agree...we obviously don't win without Bennie. It was one of his worst collegiate games and he put up those numbers. Unreal.

3rd highest paid attendance since 2006. Pretty good for a rainy Saturday night against a mid-tier SEC opponent.

For some reason, a lot of our fans are chopping at the bit to hate on this dude and his effort. Yes, he foolishly acted like he was playing at a Nike Skills camp tonight and did some bonehead things on offense. He also admitted after the game that it was probably his worst performance of the season. Yet, the dude still was a beast on the boards, made some great plays down the stretch, and finished with 16 points and 18 rebounds.

Couldn't agree more with everything you stated. The young man has a double double almost every game. What a total beast! Let's enjoy our time with him!

Yes. The guy owned up for some dumb mistakes he had. I think if anything, it was a learning experience. Not to mention he's been sick. But we as fans, we're saying 16 points and 18 rebounds isn't good enough? How is that fair to the young man? Do we want him to start hating LSU because nothing is EVER good enough?

Butt, you're sounding like a sunshine pumper, or me as you like to put it. I must say I loved reading ur post. Brought a tear to my eye. Read it while listening to Bruce Hornsby and the range singing that's just the way it is, some things will never change. With that being said you just have to deal with it. I watched the Ole Miss game without being on the rant. TALK ABOUT LESS STRESS!!!!!!!' Prolly gonna do the same Tuesday. For fun I was reading the Kentucky board while watching their game and boy the melt was not nearly as bad but they still had enough of them. The Cal underachievers posting that with his talent he has brought in he should have won at least 4 and NOT 1!!!!! Only that idiot ChrXis thinks Cal won multiple championships. I'm sure even Bama has their idiots thinking Saban the almighty should be 7 for 7. Look like I said I'm gonna enjoy this ride and that good teams find a way to win games like tonight. Well we did, call it what u want, but Kentucky could not find a way to win. Peace my brother

These same sorts were around back in 1989-91 trashing Shaq. There just wasn't an internet back then. Their opinions don't matter.

LSU as a team needs to continue to improve. The players themselves admit this.

LSU as a whole doesn't have a knowledgeable basketball fanbase. Some of them expect Simmons to go 40/20 every game and are disappointed he doesn't. They have heard these stories of Pistol Pete and his domination at LSU, but don't realize LSU never made the NCAAT with Pistol Pete. They shite on Dale Brown as much as they can even though he Dale is the best basketball coach in LSU history. They think the 1989 team was the most talented team in basketball history even though UNLV and GT were more talented the same year. They want CJJ fired at any moment even though he has the best record of any LSU basketball coach in his first 4 years.

These are the same folks last year that said LSU would be lucky to make the NIT and wouldn't listen at all that LSU was an NCAAT lock. When LSU got a 9 seed, they disappeared like clockwork until LSU couldn't score the last 10 minutes against NCST.

I've personally been critical of this team because I post what I see on the floor. We're inconsistent. Focus and effort is lacking at times. Criticism itself shouldn't be an issue.

But Simmons has a "bad game" rolling up 16/18/3 and it's that narrative again. Guy is putting up an average of 20/15/5 through his first 17 games in college, something that has been rarely done. Yet he's overrated and fire CJJ.

What a post...that's a great post. Our team is very frustrating at times, and I was hoping for a big run. It may happen, it may not. But I'll be damned if I'm gonna miss Simmons dominating like he is

Because most aren't legitimate. The object is to win the game. We succeeded in that tonight. People want to look BIG picture and against other teams. When in reality, to a coach and player, it is a simple concept...win the next game on the schedule. Seriously, that's the bottom line. That's the ONLY thing that matters

I drank a little tonight; and had fun at that nail biting game. It was frustrating; but I agree with everything you said; EXCEPT one thing you haven't mentioned.

The last few weeks allot of DIFFERENT players have come on besides Benny. We have ALLOT of talent on this team. KY was Qman. Ole Piss was Blakeney. Tonight was Gray and Victor.

I find this as a great testament to Benny's leadership; and how he is trying to get this offense going, because it is run through him anyways. He may have tried to hard to do that tonight and it ended in some careless turnovers. It was frustrating.

But this team is talented. Disciplined on fouls, and improving on defense. I appreciate your pregame analysis each game, as well.

Have an upvote, Butt.

Glad LSU won tonight!! This is what we need IF we make it to the NCAA tourney- grinding out games against quality opponents. Unfortunately any realistic fan knows Johnny Jones can't coach. We are winning on talent alone. We need to win 8 of the next 9 games to have a shot at making the NCAA tourney hopefully we can get HOT!

This. Any thread discussing legit criticism or thought gets derailed by fringe posters - which in LSU basketball fandom terms is 80%.

I agree with you that winning a game and moving on to the next game is the most important thing.

But I do think there is legitimacy to the point that dominant teams begin to display dominant play. Every game shouldn't have LSU down by 3-4 at halftime. Playing a full 40 and overpowering your opponent is something lacking right now.

We have a lot of key pieces and depth to do this. IMO we need the mindset to accomplish it.

4-1 in SEC play is a great start and as I said in the UF thread, I personally don't count that as a loss. Too shady. But the team as a whole shouldn't let refs decide the game. Esp. against a team like UF. When you dominate, the refs are marginalized.

This is difficult though when you have a guy like TQ that you're counting on immensely and he decides to check out.

I will confess I have been too hard on Simmons but it is hard not to expect incredible things from him with the hype we are bombarded with. And no that is not Simmons fault, he isn't the one saying these things but the media has just been so far over the top that I think it's caused a backlash in me. There are other players on the team but all we ever hear about is Simmons,. Simmons, Simmons and how unbelievably great he is.

Every story or tv spot about LSU basketball leads with Simmons and talks about almost nothing else. We are even told that we (LSU fans and coach I suppose) should feel guilty because here we have this great, once in a decade player and can't win games. They moan and groan about he might not even get to play in the tournament. The implication being that if he had just gone somewhere else besides the bozos on the bayou, his team would be a shooin for the tournament and playing great.

Ben is a very good player but some of our losses were not in spite of him but he played his part as well. No one is perfect. His game has weaknesses that no one in the media ever talks about like his jump shooting and ball defense. Lately his turnovers have been a serious problem. If it is because he has had the flu I wish they would tell us so. There is no shame in not playing your best if you are sick.

The other thing that drives me crazy is the talking heads going into ecstasy when he finishes a drive with his right hand saying that he is left handed. He is obviously ambidextrous. He always finishes drives with his right hand. I have never seen him use his left when he is driving from the left. It would actually be to his advantage most times to use his left hand because his body would be shielding the ball.

Again none of this is Simmon's fault. It is the unrelenting news media that has created unrealistic expectations. For all of his great natural talent and poise, he is still just one year out of high school. I can't imagine that all of this hasn't put a great deal of stress on him and may have affected his play somewhat. Not to mention how the rest of his teammates have reacted to just being after thoughts when the team is discussed.

It was a good game, had all the thrills and spills. I loved the crowd effort. My throat is already sore from screaming the last 5 minutes, imagine where I would be if I had to keep that throughout the game.

Also the crowd did try to get behind the team a few occasions in the game but then something happened to quiet them down, like the trey in the first half after the dunk or the Ben turnover on the steal!!

The crowd was big but awful until 5 minute mark. I felt like at times my section 109 me and fiancé were only ones yelling. So many old people at the games who don't say a word even to their spouses. It was awesome when it was loud and players fed off energy but it's sad that we can't give them energy thoug out. They played flat bc the crowd was not even as loud as high school game until 5 left or so

Yep.

My roommate and I talked about it...we think it's a generational thing, too. There will always be an older crowd at the game, but the younger crowd is too concerned about selfies and snapchats. I had some people sit in front of me at Ole Miss and they were all younger...probably early 20's. They showed up late, then just sat and played on their phone for 90% of the game. I don't sit near the student section, but I predict the student section is like this, as well. One dude actually was cheering when Moody had that putback dunk, and I lost my shite. I dropped several f bombs to the person sitting with me about that guy. Needless to say I know he heard and he shut his arse up...I felt badass

Why does the enjoyment of a victory always has to be tempered with a discussion of "issues"? Can't they ever be seen as separate topics?

What is it about the opinions of "issues" that the average fan has that make them more important than the pure fact of a victory?
