A friend and I were talking the other day about our concerns for the overall leadership at every level at LSU.

His daughter who is a very good student here in Austin, took a tour along with him and was not impressed due to the primary selling points not being about the schooling but athletics and the people being great.

I recall being in class in 1992 and being given the impression LSU was trying to model itself after the University of Virginia in its requirements and enrollment and moving towards that steadily. Also, at that time, our endowment was 52 million, Tulane's was 234 million, and Texas's 3 billion.

I think our dysfunction in athletics is simply an outward sign of bigger issues. Is there anyone who knows or has a feel for the overall vision or direction of LSU? Is here hope for improvement or better overall leadership?

Our endowment has really grown. Academics improved but not competitive at all with UT or UVA academically

What vision? Watch the state. As it goes, so does its university. Not very promising.

Leadership is short sided. LSU could print their own money with the right leadership.

There is none outside of the colleges of engineering and business. The rest of the school is a collection of petty selfish deans all constantly trying to screw over oneanother, a front office more worried about image, political posturing, political correctness, and trying not to be labeled a "party school", to worry about tiny matters like educating students, making sure buildings aren't crumbling, or ensuring that their big time donors aren't hacked off at them.

It's like a fortune 500 company that's being run into the ground by third generation management (see HP under Carlie Fiorina).

They are so worried about appearing to be some serious academic institution that they completely ignore the whole academic parts. Professors don't teach, research trips go unfunded, instructors are laid off, sections are reduced so students cannot schedule classes to graduate on time, scholarship money is "lost", greek organizations are banned just to "make examples", any drinking is heavily scrutinized, concerts are censored for content and have to have a drug-free, alcohol-free message, ect.

It is shameful that an institution as storied as LSU is run in such a chicken-shite manner.

I entered LSU in 92 and never got that feel. I find know that were trying to shake the party school stigma at that time.

Well, that number is OK...would love to see it much higher at this point. I would also love to see an honest evaluation of all of the state supported schools in Louisiana and whether they are viable...

All I know is we have the worst AD ever. And if the powers that be could hire another Mark Emmert type....progressive, realized D1 Football is a gold mine to everyth9ng else, we will start the rise to prominence academically and athletically...

Absolutely....Athletics seems to be the only place left in the state with money, so everyone is trying to stick their hands in it and screw with it.

The idea that we can build academic success and university success off of athletic success is exactly what Alabama is doing.

We need a new visionary leader like Emmert to infuse the demand and direction to build the university back.

My bad. Meant to say, in the SEC. I remember when Emmert and Saban were her, we did. Especially after the 2003 NCG...

F King Alexander is an academic, not businessman, therefore he is not going to engineer a plan for a better university system. I work in the EBR school system and the best superintendent we ever had was Charlotte Placide. She was not an academic and didn't claim to be, she was an economist that gave teachers raises every year, which recruited better talent, and trusted the leaders of the other aspects of the school system excel by letting them do their job and leave them alone. F King is the problem with the university system and the BOD like him bc they control him. They need to find a man who they might not control and who might not be an academic, but knows how to build an organization. I know it sounds crazy but they should recruit someone who is slightly politically savy and has experience building and running a huge coorporation, like Jim Bernhart.
