LSU Tigers. Won't let myself think about anything else. Blasphemy.

Gators in a pen are whack. They stink and just lay their cold-blooded asses around all day. Mike struts around, climbs, and rips things to shreds.
No contest: Tigers

LSU Mud dogs
I wouldn't want anything but a tiger as our mascot. Just go look at him he is by far the baddest mascot on any college campus.

Interesting thread UF1950.
It is thought-provoking to think of the Louisiana Gators (has sort of a ring to it :)
But I think that 'Tigers' while being a somewhat boring, pedestrian, general mascot, was probably popular in 1893 because of its connation to the "Fighting Band of Louisiana Tigers" who distinguished themselves in the Civil War.
Also, the moniker "Fightin' or Fighting Tigers" got it's start and/or was added to Tigers after WWII when Louisiana fighter pilots saved lives and shot down Japanese planes. One of their aircraft was actually named "Fighting Tiger."
And I absolutely LOVE the Mike the Tiger tradition. We are on our sixth live tiger - this one being a Siberian/Bengal tiger mix who was originally the house pet of the adminstrators of the Great Cats of Indiana Sanctuary - who donated him to LSU.
Mike VI's Habitat is sick. He is cared for the LSU Vet School, and he loves to put his paws up to the glass when visitors, esp. kids, come by.

take away the fact that ull has it now and you can't deny that "ragin cajuns" would have been a fantastic mascot for lsu. hell, all the announcers refer to our fanbase as cajuns now.

When I was an ignorant child who did not know the reasoning behind the name Tigers, I always wondered why not the gators. However, after knowing the history of the soldiers the mascot is picked to represent, it makes me feel proud to be a tiger. Auburn should be the the one that change. They are the ones named after a line in a stupid poem...

quote:Yes, I can. I am one half cajun and absolutely love that part of my lineage. However, the only way I would want that name for my school would be if we were called the LSU Muthafrickin' Crazy Coonasses.

I say we should be the Fightin' Mo Isoms since she aint skeered to take on anybody.

We could take a page from Auburn's playbook. Official name would be Gators, but our mascot would be a tiger - that way, we still get the intimidation factor when the other team comes out of the tunnel. And before every game we'd release a flock of brown pelicans to fly around the stadium.
