How is a coach that's 128-26 and a national title at his school not a top coach? He even won a lot when he was at North Carolina.

Mack Brown is not a top tier coach, because he doesn't get the most out of the talent he has assembled.

The top tier coaches can recruit, develop talent and get that talent to perform to the best of its abilities. The latter is where Brown falls short. This makes him in my book an average coach.

Ok Bo get back to work! You are there to rebuild the Huskers; that is by recruiting better players and getting a better O.C. and system yourself. Trying to steal as many LA players as you can, while doin this?

College teams didn't play 12 game schedules when Jimmy Johnson coached at the U.

If he corrects the offensive scheme and disfunction of this past season, and the team matures with experience and capability, then I think people will think that he is more like Johnson than Coker
......
... and he grows more hair, learns to speak in public, takes a program decimated by losses or NCAA regs and improves it, develops the ability to inspire a group of young men to step up every week, starts recruiting thugs, pigs fly, saints make superbowl, commits to an offensive philosophy, hell freezes over, and lsu fans stop leaving at halftime. Then and ONLY then will he be anything like good ol Jimmy

When somebody compares Miles to Coker, it is a red flag that they don't know what they are talking about.
And conversely, when they compare Miles to a great coach who has legitimacy and respect from the NFL, said person also doesn't know what they are talking about.

So, let me get this straight, by starting this thread you're tell everyone here that Miles is a great coach, and using Jimmy Johnson's success to try to prove it?

For the previous poster comparing Saban vs Jimmy Johnson

Because Saban's record got worse when he was at Miami.... Jimmy Johnson's got better... Saban bolted and ran like a bitch when he was failing.... Jimmy won two Super Bowls when the tough got going... Saban couldn't even tell the coaches that he hired for Miami assistants that he was a bitch and was leaving, he made the owner do it.... Jimmy poured champagne on his coaches twice for sticking around to win two Super Bowls.... Saban is a great college coach and was a failure in the NFL... Jimmy was a great college coach AND great NFL coach... Saban couldnt hold Jimmy's jock strap... Miles is no where near Jimmy either....

People run down Les Miles for a few basic things:

1-7 versus Arky, Ole Miss, Bama, and Florida the last 2 years. He has to prove from here on out he can beat Saban and Meyer (and even Nutt). He deserves next year to try. I am betting he can't do this, but time will tell. I could care less about his grammar or how he speaks.

Bottom line on Les Miles is that until he's gone some will hate him, some will love him, most will be iffy. Once he's gone, his legacy will (like Saban) be defined by what the guy after him does. I guess that's what keeps sports boards like this running though.

Miles should be so lucky.
Let Miles try the NFL..he would be eaten alive by the players......you think there is no discipline now, wait until he tries to control those making more $ than him...AND understand the game.

He may get lucky and get an offer from Michigan next year if Rodriguez does not do well.
I do not even see him getting a valid NFL offer.

This is why no one takes (or should take) the rant seriously. I mean who are you to determine that he's "not getting the most of the talent he recruits?" And why aren't you getting close to $5 million a year instead of writing this garbage?

How do you know he is not getting the most out of his talent? Maybe his talent was all over rated and he is coaching them up. The point is, you have no way of knowing how well he is doing except by looking at his results. And his results say he is a top coach.

Unless he tries in NFL as a head coach we can't fully compare Les to Johnson. We can however state saban and his failed NFL attempt
is not close to Johnson

I also haven't seen anyone banging down the door to sweep up Les Miles into the NFL with a sweetheart deal either.

This is where I disagree with you, and perhaps it's in my definition of a good coach. When I think of a good coach, I tend to think of a guy like Pete Carill, the old Princeton basketball coach. Here's a guy who takes a collection of inferior athletes and puts them in a position to win games against vastly more talented teams, by outsmarting, outexecuting, outhustling and outgameplanning the opposition. Maybe this is too narrow a definition, but that's what I think of when I think of a good coach.

Certainly one can have great success and a great record but still not be considered a great coach. You have to look past just the w/l record. Larry Coker's career record was 60-15 at Miami. Does anyone think he is a top coach? By your "results only" definition, Larry Coker must be considered a top coach. Look at his winning percentage.

The OP brought up Mack Brown, not me. My orginal post in the thread was about Les Miles and his consistently poor clock management decisions.
