I don't live in BR, but as I recall from reading reports - and this board - at the time, there was never any charge! Nothing was trumped up!

The woman's very young daughter was asked about any men her mother had seen and she answered with the only name she knew. So, he became a person of interest, not charged with anything, until the police could check him out. Then, some jackass leaked it, the media picked it up, and no NFL team wanted to take the risk of drafting him...not even the Cowboys. His agent told them not to bother taking him lower than the second round, so they all passed.

Neither the Saints nor anyone else was going to draft him. They wouldn't in the first two rounds because they thought it was too risky, and they wouldn't in the later rounds because his agent said he wouldn't sign.

The Cowboys offered him a very nice free agent contract after the dust settled. The only way the Saints screwed up was by not beating the Cowboys' free agent offer...if they were even given the chance.

La'el is the only lineman I've ever seen consistently run down field with the running backs. The guy is incredibly light on his feet for his size and strength and got better every year at LSU. I'm glad to see him finally get the payday he deserves, even if it is with the Cowboys

Just like clockwork! So did 31 other NFL teams, INCLUDING the Dallas Cowboys! NOBODY drafted him and Collins CHOSE the Dallas Cowboys as a free agent. Get over it and move on!

Good. I am happy for him. And I am still mad that the Saints didn't draft him in the late rounds.

That's why the Saints are mediocre. Which round did they draft Stanley Jean Baptiste in again? Don't take no chances with a second round pick that might not play....

Did he ever sue or get any money for the defamation of character (or whatever the legal term is)?

No one defamed him or wronged him in any way. The police simply listed him as a person of interest, which is standard in a case like that. It was just very unfortunate timing and a freak occurrence.

It also coincided with the NFL being hyper sensitive about violence toward women. A perfect storm of misfortune. It probably cost him $10 million that he'll never get back.

The Dolphins chartered a jet and sent Jarvis Landry, Kelvin Sheppard and Anthony Johnson to Baton Rouge to recruit Collins. That would have been awesome to get him and then get Tunsil the next year when he slipped to #13 after the bong video.
