Just finished til the 4th Q strip. All of the psychobabble body language revisionist history lockerroom fight BS aside, bama outcoached and outplayed lsu. our defense was good. theirs was great. their special teams was way better than ours. their offense was way better than ours. As a team, win or lose.

I think there were calls to throw down field but JJ looked for a split second then ran no matter the call. He ran the option so poorly it was laughable. ( over and over : ) The o line was horrible. Drew brees would have struggled in that game.

He was that bad. The game plan was even worse.

Wrong. No offensive line on the planet can hold back a defense when you can NOT run or pass the ball. The offense was NOT one-dimensional, it was non-dimensional.

cheers to you for being ready to stomach watching the replay. I think I will wait until next week before attempting to watch it.

I watched the entire game last night and I agree with your analysis 100%, except you left out one thing: our blocking (line, backs and receivers) was just horrible. Facing a four man rush on numerous plays, our five lineman and one back could not hold the rush out for more than 2 seconds. That is horrible.

I do not understand this offensive staffs affinity for the short side of the field

You typically want to go to the short side of the field when the other team has more team speed. It allows the OL to get to their blocks easier. It's not always effective because it limits cut back lanes. It's not really designed for the big play - more of a 4, 5 yard per carry strategy.

That is when you protect your QB by throwing a lot of quick slants, outs. I saw many plays when JJ had more than enough time to get the ball downfield though. Asking for more than 3 seconds is asking for a lot of any OL.

Total BS. Name the plays (outside of the single aforementioned Hurst play) that this happened. It didn't happen on any other single play that I saw through 3 quarters. Even then I thought that it might have been a 5 man rush.

[quote]Spot on assessment. I'd add that Bama deferring the kickoff also helped, as both were probably going to be effective on defense on the first drive more than likely. And finishing the first half, and knowing the offense was going to be right back out and the defense of Lsu on the field probably hurt the mindset too. I feel Bama did exactly what Lsu did in the first game and this game defensively, and that was to focus on stopping the run, first and foremost, no matter what it took. The offensive philosophy changed for Bama in this game from the first game, and it didn't for Lsu, and that was the difference in the outcome, imo.

[quote]

I agree, and also lsu maybe was unwilling to adjust their game plan much b/c of the success (though still limited) they had in the first game and alabama was probably more motivated and willing to change some plays in - more pass first mentality.
fwiw - i glad that jj has completed his eligibility and the way jl was treated this season particularly after the first alabama was very offensive - he owes jl an explanation and hopefully he got one.

Jefferson was not as bad as you may think. As expected, it was the play calling that stunk. The false starts and the missed plays on 3rd down were killer. Regardless, those 3rd down plays were probably not going to go for much. Bama was begging us to pass deep on them and we didn't. Not a single pass was thrown beyond 10 yards. Repeat...not a single pass was thrown beyond 10 yards.

Maze's big punt return hurt and was unexpected and set up their first field goal. If he doesn't mess up his hamstring on that run, I wonder if he takes it to the house.

Defense played well until the last two drives of the half. I think that is when the back was broken. Alabama was able to twice drive all the way down the field to get the FG.

Think about...we had one first down in the first half and Bama's offense was able to drive down the field twice in a row and get FG's to end the half.

Each of those two drives started on Bama's 25 and 24, respectively.

Going up 9-0 was a huge momentum boost and no doubt deflated our guys.

McCarron played nearly flawless. He was able to escape pressure and make plays. He was perfect on those out-routes to the TE, and made some huge completions throughout the half, especially on that last drive of the 2nd qtr. He was the difference in the game.

So, the players are in the locker room at half time...the score is 9-0...the defense has just given up two long drives for scores and the offense has one first down and hasn't crossed the 50. Deflating.

Maybe I will watch the 2nd half later...the fact that I am able to watch it again means that I am pretty much past this game.

I agree with literally everything posted.

Jefferson certainly wasn't great, but he's definitely not the sole reason we lost either. The playcalling was horrendous. The offensive line was awful.

Mainly though, I really felt that our coaches let our players down. It was terrible.
