Good Read

quote:

When John Chavis and Phillip Fulmer were assistant coaches at the University of Tennessee a quarter-century ago, they undertook an off-field project together.

"We built a swing set for our kids," Fulmer recalled. Well, not exactly. "John was quite a carpenter. He knew what he was doing," Fulmer said. "I pretty much just stood there and handed him the tools."

That's typical Chavis. He's hands-on. Always has been. Always will be. It's one of the reasons he is among the top defensive coordinators in all of college football. He's Mr. Fix-It. For 20 years, first at Tennessee and now at LSU for the last six seasons, Chavis has structured defenses that have consistently performed well in a changing world of football.

John has interviewed for some head coaching jobs and looked into things, but I don't think the right opportunity has come up," Fulmer said. "He keeps those things quiet because he's not a self-promoter."

players at his various coaching stops along the way have referred to him by the politically incorrect nickname "Chief,"

who the hell knows what's politicaly correct or incorrect these days. I know a teacher that got into pretty serious trouble calling a student a Mexican one time. the kid's parents were both born in fricking mexico and the kid was too. so what the hell was he? it gets where you either walk on eggshells or just frick it and call people what you want to. "hey, did you hear the one where this coonass, dago and chink walked into this bar........."

I remember my dad telling me back in the 70's that people from Mexico don't like to be called "Mexicans". They prefer to be referred to as "Hispanic". And that was back when we didn't even know what PC was. Among other things, it probably has something to do with the consensus that Mexican Spanish occupies the bottom rung on the ladder of Spanish dialects. It's like the redneck English spoken in most of the South.

I do have one small complaint. The past 2 times we played Alabama at LSU, we had a lead in both games with just 1-2 minutes to go and for some reason the defense goes from attack to back off. The CB's normally play up on the receivers and they instead give the WR's of Bama a 5-7 yrd cushion. We have seen them march down the field twice now to win the game in the first one, then this year they tied the game and we went into overtime.

Not just Bama either, but for some reason we don't close on D when we absolutely need to in tight tight games...

I am not just trying to blame the Chief or our D by no means, absolutely not. I love the way he brings D together, but either the players can't close, or the coaching can't close, or its a combo of both. They all seem to play timid as if not to make mistakes, when we owned them all game on D. Trust me I don't put this all on our D. We would not be in some of these positions if we only had better O play as well.

Anyway done ranting. I love LSU. I love the Chief, Cam, and Les.

But this next year we will have no excuses. Our O better produce and be balanced!!!

and Buga nation!!!

George, please do not copy and paste so much of the article...2-3 paragraphs with link is sufficient...I edited it for you.
