@jimcallisMLB: 5th-rder Jared Foster signs w/@Angels for $100k (slot 165 = $304,700). Louisiana St senior OF, former QB, power potential & speed. @MLBDraft

Did he sign for his slot amount or $100k? I'm confused.

He's a senior. He has no leverage as he cant play anywhere else. It's why teams draft seniors in the top 10 rounds so they can overpay for the high school kids that actually have leverage to keep them from going to college.

Yep. It really sucks how this is done. It's why we see all of our juniors leave. You have to go get your money.

As oppose to what, pretend he hit .500 with 7 homeruns because we are homer fans?

I'm not trying to be a jerk but I don't follow any of this. They drafted him in a spot with a $300k amount and then he signs for $100k?

If you could dumb this down for me, I'd appreciate it

or maybe just be happy the guy got drafted where he did and hope he does well in the future? or does it make you feel better to shite on a kid because he didn't play well the last two games in Omaha?

I don't think he shite on him by making a joke about the MLB seeing his at bats at the cws.

No as opposed to saying something shitty like;

quote:

He figured they watched him bat in the CWS so he wanted to sign as quickly as possible.

He came here and competed both in football and baseball, be happy for the kid and quit being a dick and saying something shitty. Fact is I can guarantee that his athletic career so far dwarfs most of the arm-chair coaches on this board.

The MLB can sign players for less than their slot value and use that extra money to go over the slot value on other players. Since Foster is a senior, he has no leverage against the team in negotiations so they can basically low ball him with this offer that he has to take. Now the Angels have an extra $200k to use on some HS kid they drafted in the 25th round.

If he had wanted to, could he have held out for some sort of arbitration where a 3rd party decides a fair signing bonus? I can imagine there's a risk that pissing the club off like that might affect you negatively down the road as you try to move up the ranks, but is that even an option?

After a certain date(July 15th I think), if the player is still unsigned the team that drafted him would lose the rights to that player and have to forfeit the slot value anyways. And the player would be eligible to re-enter the draft next year. Considering Foster doesn't have any eligibility left, he pretty much had no choice but to sign.

Dude also slayed, and I mean slayed, a quantity and quality of females 99 percent of people who post on internet message boards (including myself) could ever begin to dream of. Congratulations Jared.

nope

You take it or don't sign. The team would lose the slot amount for that pick so it's not advantageous for them if you don't sign, but on your end that is literally your only leverage.

Sucks. But I wish him well. If he does good, the money will eventually come.

the best quote anyone ever told me was 'the real money is in the big leagues' I've used it with every recently drafted kid I've met.
