I remember they tried this in the late 90s and scrapped it.
Syracuse attempted a rebrand as the Orange Pack around 1995 with a wolf logo that vanished almost instantly. An old math teacher of mine was a 'Cuse grad and showed me a picture once. He claimed it was pushed by Nike, but some of the Orange fans here probably have more details.

The article is correct in one regard, for some reason "cartoony" was a big fad in the late 90's and early 2000's.
Alabama introduced these monstrosities in 1998 that everyone hated, and they only lasted as the main logos for 4 years.
They were never officially retired, just almost entirely phased out, you can barely find merchandise with them.
Around that same time Auburn did this
Arkansas did this
I have no idea why this was such a craze, all of these logos were very unpopular compared to the stuff they replaced.
