re: Is it time to finally give up on Russell Shepard being a big time player?

I'll argue this. They probably tried to convert him to DB at some point and he resisted. He has to be able to tackle, he is on the coverage unit. He would have had good size for DB and he is fluid. We've been stacked at DB for 4 years but he could have been starting opposite Simon of he'd had spent the past couple years working at that position.
And it's evident you only need one great year at DBU to shine and get drafted high.

Compared to the hype and expectations, hell yes he is a bust.

Not living upbringing expectations in football is the definition of a bust.

All it takes is one play.

Still a lot of football in front of him.

It's obviously the fault of we, the fans, that RS hasn't worked out at WR....

One play? Who cares about one play. I feel bad for him because he'll be arena league this time next year and he has NFL athleticism.

I'll never give up on him. He's a great guy and a weapon. He's made some plays over the years. Looking forward to more this year.

No but shitting on a player after a convincing win is bs.

I'm still on Team Shep. He was as big a cheerleader for LSU as any one player I remember, way more so that some in state players who don't seem to think much of LSU and bolted.
He may not get as many "critical time" snaps for a while, but I will always pull for him to succeed. Forget about the past Shep, the future starts now.

Find me one post in this thread shitting on Russell Shepard. People are simply saying it's time to stop expecting him to be the star playmaker of this team. Yes he will contribute greatly throughout this season, but he will probably never turn out to be LSU's Percy Harvin. The reading comprehension around this place is a fricking joke.

No it's not. A bust is someone who doesn't contribute or can't get on the field. Shep has scored multiple TDs every year.not living up to expectations is just that.

Look, I love the guy, but he's a bust. He dropped a sure TD tonight and had drops against North Texas too. He'll get fewer and fewer chances this year because we have other more talented receivers and he just doesnt make plays. I've been waiting four years for him to have a break out game, but it's just not going to happen.

RS will not be an All-SEC player, but neither will a lot of quality players on LSU's team. He's certainly not the tallest, quickest, fastest or best hands receiver on the team, but he is good.
Unfortunately he just doesn't fit the physical SEC mold or skills set for any dominant offensive position. Had he gone to a mid-level team in the Big 12, ACC or PAC 10 he may have been more fully utilized. But LSU just has too much talent to play around with to try and force the issue that RS is the guy that HAS TO score. He doesn't.
Having said that I'm glad he came back this year. I hope he does well and improves his draft stock.

SOmething tells me if he hand went to Texas he would be a starting running QB like vince young. We mis-used him at LSU and for that I feel bad.
Now this is a guy who REALLY doesn't get it. If you think RS could have been a QB of ANY kind AT any level of CFB then you are letting some high school film make a fool of you. RS had a great HS career and some of the best highlight reels ever. But his talents haven't transferred to the D-1 level...at least not to the level expectations set. He is a great kid and pretty good complimentary player for LSU...just not an elite one.
Not every HS player's talents transfer well to CFB. RS is not the only player this has ever happend to....but perhaps he is the highest profile player at LSU to ever underwhelm to this extent. If you just take his HS expectations out of the equations and only look at his production since he got to LSU you won't be nearly as disappointed!

They should use him with more quick passes, end arounds, etc. He looked good last year when the ball was in his hands. He isn't a very good receiver

Love the guy but he isn't in the top three of our wr and justifiably so. But I think his "drop" tonight was a bad call. Looked like a touchdown to me.

Yeah.. no more passes at least... He's dropped sure passes too much the past couple games.
