Initially signing the best player out of high school in the world is a no brainer. The national exposure from signing Ben was short lived and then ultimately turned into bad publicity for underachieving. Then there were reports of Ben not being a team player. It seems like the program took a nose dive towards the end of last season and never recovered.

Thoughts?

I mean in the sense that it brought more eyes and attention on how woefully under coached his teams were, sure.

His inability to take advantage of Ben Simmons' crazy skillset and the solid supporting cast around him and translate it into any semblance of success, coupled with the team obviously quitting on him was his downfall.

Yes--because jones handling of Simmons pissed off the other players like quarterman which led to Jones losing their respect/trust..

He was in over his head to begin with and the way he handled Ben Simmons was a clear display of that.

Wish him the best if he coaches again, but he's not a high major coach.

I get what you are saying, but imagine if Jones didn't sign Simmons. The basketball program for the 2015-2016 season would have very little excitement and arguably even a worse record than the 19-14 season they put up.

Would he have survived after that season?

Johnny Jones was a virgin that convinced Miss Universe to sleep with him, then didn't know wtf to do when she took her clothes off

I think without the "you had the #1 overall pick in the draft and couldn't even make the tourney" year the heat would not have been AS bad, but 2 SEC wins still woulda ended in this result without it.

Maybe, but only because it proved he couldn't coach. When you have the best player in the country and you can't make the tournament, thats your problem. If we don't get Simmons, CJJ might still be here but it certainly doesn't mean the program would be any better.

I always thought blowing the big lead against NC State in the tourney was the end for him. Had they gone on a run after that win, some momentum may have shifted things in a different direction (knowing Simmons was already in the bag).

I think the year of Simmons only sped up what would have ultimately happened under Johnny Jones.

I think with what happened with Fultz made it more bearable. But its hard to survive a season like we just had. It did put him squarely on the hot seat before the season though..

He is a kid.

Johnny did a terrible job of corralling him. He let a fricking Showtime show follow him around. It didn't help that Quarterman was such a bad attitude.

Ben Simmons was fricking awesome at LSU. No one should remember him any other way. Will Wade gets last year's team a 4 seed.

Give a woman a Ferrari.

Do you blame the car because it's not being driven properly?

No ... the fact that a grown man, the head coach at LSU no less, couldnt control his own player to help a program achieve goals and build upon a future was the downfall of Johnny Jones.

Jones simply could not get the team to play together or put forth the effort needed to win or compete on game days. This team played with no structure and looked like 5 streetball players on the court at any given time this year playing under no scheme.

Jones downfall was his lack of leadership and respect his players had for him.

No IMHO it was the capitulation and lack of accountability after he was signed that was part of the downfall of Johnny, But ultimately it was that lack of accountability in every facet that was the biggest problem, Ben was just a part of that legacy.
