Did anyone else think this year was going to be good when the team gave up on the season last year. Jones couldn't get them to play in the NIT. My suspicion is only Alleva thought changing the calendar would make a difference.

I mean in the sense that it brought more eyes and attention on how woefully under coached his teams were, sure.
This.
Simmons had a monster year at LSU and carried an otherwise rudderless ship under Jones. The defensive issues were there from day one. It's just that Mickey masked a lot of it for two years with his shot blocking. He had a million blocked shots because LSU's lack of perimeter defense let EVERYONE get to the rim. Pre-Simmons the offense was inefficient. Post-Simmons it was worse.
This year was the perfect storm for Jones to fail. He didn't have that post-presence he always had who could create his own scoring opportunities with the half-court offense (or lack there of) broke down. Under almost any other coach in the top 25 Simmons would have be a POY candidate. He averaged 19/12/5 at LSU. That's a combined stat line that is very rare in CBB.
Jones hid in virtual anonymity at LSU with only LSU fans aware of the talent he was wasting. The exposure that Simmons brought to the program brought Jones' shortcomings as a coach out into the light

Remember when we couldn't inbound the ball for an entire conference season?

Summons hurt Jones two ways.
First he couldn't harness his talent and integrate it into a functioning offense, couldn't get him to play or play in an overall team concept with special plays designed for Simmons. And no, giving Simmons the ball 30 foot from the basket and letting him freelance is not a special play.
Second, the special treatment given Simmons undermined team morale and discipline.which continued on over to this season. All the hoopla, Showtime and special privileges for Simmons was a killer.

CJJ had his problems but you obviously have no idea of what the Ben Simmons situation was at LSU.
First, Jones had nothing to do with Simmons coming to LSU. Simmons came to LSU as a favor to his godfather David Patrick. You could have been the HC of the program and Simmons was still coming for that 1 year.
Second, Simmons was not at LSU to play basketball and win anything. He was there because he had to complete 1 season at he collage level to be draft eligible.
Third Simmons not being used in the right way was largely Ben Simmons fault, He wanted to showcase himself for scouts, and his documentary he was having filmed of himself through out the season, thus Simmons' historic individual statistics and the team looking like the first time they all played together almost every night.
CJJ failed at raining in the legend in his own mind and it cost him the respect of the rest of the team, and ultimately his job. Had CJJ kicked Simmons off the team (As some argued for ) The season would have finished much the same, but after the shock wore off over pulling the scholarship of the #1 player people would have realized CJJ did the right thing a kept control of his team.
Buy Coach K or Calapari a few drinks and ask them why they never seriously recruited Simmons... I'm sure they would agree the kid reeked of coach killer.

Or maybe its because they knew they couldn't get him

Are we again on the Ben Simmons is to blame for last season bullshite? Really?
Yeah, I'm sure K and Cal thought he would get them fired. Also, they both did recruit him.

Jones is to blame for treating Simmons differently and for not figuring a good way to use him.
Simmons just took advantage of things.

Not really - the signs were there when they blew that huge lead to NC State during the one tournament JJ made. He just didn't have it as a coach. He used to press a decent bit and get more transition points when he first started, but gradually got less aggressive until things just got really bad.

Being a shitty coach and recruiter was his downfall. The only reason Simmons was here was because of the god father.

And even fricking then, it looked like he might pick Kansas. What a shite show the Double J era was.

Jones is gone .., let it be. He was rightly replaced, but some of you gutless cowards can't resist continuing sticking the knife in him. You can only hope that you show 1/1000 of the class he has displayed through this ordeal, you gutless cowards.

You act like he was fired 10 years ago. It's still a pretty fresh story in the minds of LSU basketball fans. Methinks you should seek a safe space, m'lady.

Same with Jayson Tatum, Josh Jackson, Lonzo Ball, etc

Playing as a center defensively and at times offensively wasn't showcasing himself to scouts. This is a guy who will play plenty of POINT GUARD in the league.

It gave him an extra year after he should've been gone.

No, his downfall was in not signing better players to play with Simmons. We desperately (still do) needed a post player that Simmons could feed from the top of the key. Robinson, Epps and even Victor did not provide this. So Simmons was forced to post up sometimes as our best player to do that and he didn't like it. He wanted to play point guard which he saw as his position in the pros but our personnel didn't allow him to do it.
