We did this twice and it worked both times...one to shep was called back because of illegal man downfield the other was that great catch by Landry

Are you kidding? Yes, we ran it a bunch and it's a boring play, but it was netting 4-8 yards a pop. The DBS were giving it to us, so we were taking it. If teams want to really stop it, they are going to have to start staying closer to the line, which will help the deeper game.
But yes, it was boring.

frick that play, Please remove it. We ran it probably 12 times and it was little to no gain 10 of the 12.
Did LSU run it A LOT? Yes. Did it "not" gain yards for the most part? No. But you have to take into account that for all the hype, this was Mettenberger's first D-1 start. I'm sure the coaching staff wanted to give him some easy throws so that he could start to settle in. If he were a red-shirt freshman, most people would (or should) be fine with those kind of routes. The problem is that after 4 years of mostly lackluster QB play, LSU fans were expecting the offense to completely shift to a big-time vertical passing game (like the 70's Oakland Raiders). After they didn't see it last night, they are "furious" with the playcalling.
It was game one of the season. Mettenberger had some good and some bad, but give him and the offense time. I would be shocked if they don't start to press the ball up the field more often. For all the bitching and moaning about the bubble screens, Mettenberger made two passes last night that us fans have not seen in 4 years. On both the TD to Boone and a nice completion on a 3rd and forever in the first half, he stepped up in the pocket and stuck a pass in the deep seam. Jefferson never would have let the ball go and Lee never would have stepped up with the pocket collapsing around him. The coaches saw that and now they'll become a little more confident in calling such routes as the season goes on.

I'm still surprised that we still run the option,
i don't believe that was really the option. mett ain't gonna keep it; it was merely a running play with a pitch instead of a handoff.

Yall just like to bitch.
I love seeing our QB throwing the the WR's catching. If it's there take the yards. Then we have 3rd and short.

It's also entirely possible that LSU is hurting for a big-play wide receiver. On several plays you could see Mett looking downfield, then having to dump short. I don't know that you can put the lackluster passing game all on the coaches just yet.

We were getting 5-7 yards most of the time that we ran it. I'll take 2nd and 4 every time.
The reason we are running it is to stretch the defense out. If the strong safety responsible for the slot receiver is cheating inside to help stop the run, why not flip the ball outside on the bubble? This forces the safety to get out on the receiver and it keeps him from stacking the box to help against the running game.

It's refreshing to see a nugget of common sense on this board every once in a while.

Stolen from someone in another thread but the passing game was forced last night. The running game was WIDE open but our OC first wanted to pass it and second wanted to get Mett back in and some confidence. We didn't throw bubble screens because these are our best passing plays...they are easy and available when we don't run. But we could have run all night since they never stacked the box.

Anyone said this last year? Your constant bitching and ability to convince yourself that your terrible understanding of football is absolutely right are the only things that are lame.

Jarvis Landry, ODB, Kadron Boone, even RS.
You don't believe ANY of them is a big play wide receiver?

I thought RS looked good last night. Looked like he gained a little muscle mass from last year too

bullshite. No one thought we were hiding our playbook against Oregon, WVU, Arkansas, etc... People were excited about our downfield passing. You can't just make up shite and pass it off as fact as you are prone to do.

I think he's saying there aren't any Dwayne Bowe's or Skylar Green's on this team.

I agree. Definitely improved. Landry and ODB looked really good.
No big play receivers? Sometimes I wonder about this place.

The execution of that play was like slow motion every time. That ball needs to get there NOW. I wonder how many picks or batted down passes we are going to see from this play through the year.
Posted on 9/2/12 at 10:01 am to HeadBusta4LSU
Good corners are gonna pick 6 that shite when we try it in conference. I don't think its a bad play every now and then but not like we used it last night. 1 or 2 were close to getting picked. And the guy who said Barkley threw a 75 yard touchdown bubble screen needs to go back and look at the tape cause he threw that pass 10 yards up the sideline.
