That remains a weird game - Herb was 14-23-1, 110 yards and Faulk went 25-172 (6.9 ypc!!!) - we still lost by 2 touchdowns behind almost 500 yards of total offense by the then unfortunately named "Rebels".
A host of factors - 11:37 a.m. kickoff, Patridge had one of the best games of his career - and while a young Deuce McAllister did not "get loose", the elder statesmen of the running back corps, Avery, had a great day rushing the ball.
AND Ole Missy's defense got to Herb 6 times for sacks - with 4 future NFL lineman, including almost certainly a hall of famer, blocking for him.

Herb was 10-17 with no turnovers and we came out of the gate firing on all cylinders. We drove across the field on our first Drive but fumbled and then we scored early in the first quarter on two one play drives one after a punt return and one after an int. If that happens yeah we have chance.
You've seen our offense. What do you think the chances are of us putting up 14 early running into 9 men fronts?
We didn't win that game with qb play. We won it by being opportunistic with turnovers, returning one int for a td and scoring three tds with extremely shortened fields. Our tds drives were 40,30, and 7 yards.

At this point in his career Jennings is no Herb Tyler.

The problem is - I haven't seen much of Ole Miss, other than a couple of drives during the Bama game.
We're committed to the run - we will try to run on anybody - the Seahawks - anybody. It's what we do.
If the OL plays like they have the past 2 games, LF/TM/KH/DW will get yards. Whether that will be enough to sustain drives remains to be seen.
If the passing game continues to improve - just a little - and we can protect the passer, I think we may surpise Ole Miss AND Bama (but drop a letdown game in College Station )... that's just the nature of the division right now - probably the strongest division in the history of college football. 25 or 26 - 1 so far this season verus non-divisional opposition - that's almost unbelieveable.

There is a chance that could happen. I hope it does. I really do. That 97 team had a bunch of Veterans looking for a breakthrough. That's not what we are right now.
I get the feeling we are going to see a good bit of three and outs and brandon Harris will finish the game

Well, going into that UF game Herb Tyler was no Herb Tyler. Here are Tyler's stats for 96 and 97:
1996- 109/188 (58%), 1,688 yards (9.0 YPA) 7 TD 8 Int
1997- 127/209 (60%), 1,581 yards (7.6 YPA) 10 TD 7 Int
I think Jennings can match those stat lines.
Tyler was somewhat better on his feet than Jennings, but not exactly Cam Newton- Tyler rushed for 245 yards in '96, 279 in '97. 2.9 YPC both years.

I think (not 100%, of course) that is with the sack yardage deducted - again, he was sacked 6 times againt Ole Miss, alone, in 1997.
The bigger point is that Herb was really accurate throwing the ball on the run - they had tons of those sprint options where he could keep it, pass it or toss it to Faulk. That caused some problems for SEC defenses.

I would put AJ and Herb about on the same level. People saying he was so good are only remembering him being very good compared to others around him, which were not very good comparing to our current level of players LSU has(minus Kevin Faulk).

Yes. Also, Tyler was so much better than our prior 2 or 3 quarterbacks, so he looked like a huge improvement (by contrast Jennings suffers in comparison with 2013 Mett).
What's also interesting is that Tyler's senior year (1998) passing numbers were much better, even as the team around him was much worse.

Herb Tyler was 10,000 time the QB as is AJ in said game/timeframe.

I think it will be a close game and we'll have opportunities to win. However, the premise of this thread is still stupid.

October 11, 1997. What a freakin game!! Watching the goal posts passed around the stadium from the field was awesome!

Can you give us another one of your deadly accurate starting QB predictions?

The 1997 offensive line included Alan Faneca, Trey Langley, Louis Williams, Todd McClure. In addition to Kevin Faulk, Rondell Mealy was on the 1997 team. On defense, Anthony "Booger" McFarland was playing defensive tackle, Kenny Mixon at Defensive End, etc.
Counting Chad Kessler, 4 players on the 1997 squad were All American at some point during their LSU career - Faneca, Faulk, Kessler and McFarland. While I think our overall depth is probably a little better right now, I reject your assertion that the team around Herb Tyler was "not very good".
Reject it roundly.

Ole Miss is gonna be the best front 7 LSU has seen all year......... They WILL have trouble running the ball throughout the game...

I haven't thought about Herb Tyler in some time. I certainly did not think we would win that game given the struggles with Florida in the 1990s.
I think a win in this game would be similar to our effort against Alabama in 2008. We ultimately lost that one in OT; but despite their faults, our QBs do not tend to throw touchdowns to the other team.

I don't buy it. Look at their opponents. Alabama did worse against Arkansas, do they have a great front 7 too?
