Weather is the biggest factor. The big 3 would not be pitching.

I don't think throwing an inning or 2 would stop him from starting. It might limit his pitch count in the game he starts though, but seems like we're pretty deep, and could easily overcome that.
And I don't know any of this for sure, maybe it would stop him from starting. If that's the case, then I understand more the risk.

I'd start Poche since Walker can't go in game 1, and I don't prioritize rest in games we have to have. If all were available, Walker would be the obvious choice for game 1.
I'm apparently in the minority, but I wouldn't use must win games as an opportunity to rest a key piece of the staff. Walker hasn't shown himself to be a Ryan Eades guy. He had some doldrums late in the regular season but has bounced back tremendously. No need to put the guy in bubble wrap in the postseason.

1. I think rain is gonna wreak havoc on this regional. Might be Tuesday before we can get it all in.
2. My ideas on pitching (with no weather consideration)
Friday: Peterson, Bain, Reynolds
Saturday: Lange and Newman
Sunday: Poche for 5 2/3 and Walker for 3 1/3 IF we are sufficiently far ahead enough when Poche is taken out.

I don't think they would throw a starter in relief knowing he may have to start a championship game a day or two later.

they're not complete games per say... but Lange and Poche have been going a solid 6-8 innings every week for the duration of this winning streak
no one's really shelled them early enough that you would bring in a guy like Walker...

Need to let Walker get 6 days rest, at least, and honestly the kid is collected enough to sit out this weekend and not miss a beat. Friday, start Peterson; Saturday, Lange; Sunday, don't screw around and pitch Poche to end things.

How many pitches would CPM allow Poche to throw and still be comfortable with him starting on Monday if necessary?
Poche - 40 pitches or until rain on Friday then johnny whole staff or Gilbert depending on the score at that point in the game.
Saturday Lange for sure then Walker in his normal rotation spot. Hess and Newman will be saved for relief Saturday or Sunday.

You also risk Walker not pitching for almost a month, and having no postseason experience
That's strange... because I thought for sure I saw him throw on the "postseason" SEC-T.

He let him throw 92 pitches last year before throwing 69 pitches on three days rest against Rice, so at least that many.

I think Gilbert is superior to Peterson, but with that said I would go Peterson Friday night to keep Gilbert available in what will/should be more competitive games on Saturday and Sunday. I don't think you need the superior pitcher on Friday night, and having Gilbert available for long relief if he's needed leaves me more confident.

You're probably right. I'm just thinking, no matter who you start against Texas Southern, you can give him 5-6 innings, no matter how great he's pitching. Then, bring in Walker for 1, really just like a warm up. Get him some work, then bring in your closers.
And possible you could do this for the following game, although I get that the competition is going to be tough, and it's a bigger risk. But it we have a big lead, I would think he could be worked in with no major issues.

If we sail thru all games we simply rest Poche after 5 and let Walker get some work. There is nothing wrong having a pitching staff that isn't worn-out.
Fresh arms are hard to come-by in the post season. Embrace it.
The NCAA gave us the worst of the 4-seeds. Enjoy the gift! Especially since this regional may not finish until Tuesday or Wednesday.

It is Texas Southern. Complete game shutout by Strall.

Strall couldn't pitch a shutout in his side session.
