to see what I thought happened. Bama was clearly the better team. How in the hell in the space of two months did Bama move from POSSIBLY being a better team to beating the shite out of us?

I'm convinced after watching the replay that we were complacent. We had basically the EXACT same gameplan. In the first game, the option worked. Bama killed the option this game.

Our defense played extremely well last night. Our defensive line, in particular, dominated the game. Brockers, Mingo, Montgomery, Edwards, and Logan ate Bama up at the point of attack for three quarters with virtually no rest.

This time Bama threw the ball on first down. They broke tendency. We didn't.

I'm really pissed after watching the game about the entire idea of a rematch. It was obvious Bama was on an absolute mission last night to avenge the loss on 11-5. That gave them an incredible advantage.

After reading many of the tweets from our players last night, I truly believe that if we had lost the first game that we would have won the BCS National Championship if the exact same set of circumstances had unfolded.

It's the reason many NFL analysts believe that NFL teams need to lose a game before the playoffs. Everything about last night's game was about this very idea. We were complacent. Our coaches and our players were never forced to look at themselves in the mirror and ask themselves how they could improve because, honestly, they believed that they could show up, run the same offense and have similar results.

I'd love to see how a third game would play out. I promise you that we would not be dominated. We MIGHT lose, but we would not witness what we witnessed last night. That's why the idea of a rematch sucks more than anything.

Outcoached

We knew Alabama was going to be an even match in the trenches

We were going to have to outplay them in other phases to win. We didn't.

They played much better on special teams than they did all year and we played much worse on special teams than we did all year.

The idea that this anything like a playoff is ridiculous. You don't wait 6 weeks for a playoff game

I would think the advantage goes to the team that wants revenge, especially if we're to believe, as we are told, that they are better in the first place.

I bet it'll be a long time before we see another rematch. That was like eating cold leftovers.

While watching the first half last night I said to no one in particular:

"It looks like the coaching staff just mailed this one in; they believed they could win by just showing up.

Bama, on the other hand, looked pissed off, disciplined, and focused.

If #9 starts the hypothetical third game, then I would have to say the outcome would be similar to last night. Bama had his game figured out. The only reason he helped back in Nov was because Bama was expecting Lee and Jefferswag and the option took them by surprise IMO.

They were ready for it last night and showed no respect for #9's arm.

IMO starting Lee in the 2nd half may have sparked the team but we will never know.

I could not sleep last night and got up and watched as well. Have to agree with you - bama was prepared, we were not. Our o-line was dominated. The decisions that JJ had to make on the run were forced. Anytime you force an error it will not come out good.

On the flip side, our D looked strong. Held bama to 5 field goals until very late in the game. HUGE! Dominated their run. Just could not stop the pass. That told me they were not prepared.

As much as I would have liked to see J-Lee, I don't know that he would have made any difference.

Simply put, bama was motivated, we were not.

I had to give my son a pep talk this morning. He was devistated - did not want to go to school and face a bama friend. I told him to hold his head up - the better team last night won. Our boys had an amazing season and have nothing to be ashamed of.

Lessons were learned by all - fans, coaches and players. I do feel for our seniors. A fine group of young men.

NOW - on to next year!

We never changed anything.
We had a few nice passes to OBJ, but never was willing to keep challenging the bama secondary. Every time, we'd go straight back to running right up the gut. We never broke our tendencies and Uncle Nick pounced on it.
As the game wore on, Miles got more conservative. The only time we even looked like we wanted to go down the field was when we were in huge down and distance disadvantages.
Where was the 1st down passes?
Where was utilizing the TE?
Where was taking a quick shot down the field to RR?

Of course it didn't help that the OL got their arse handed to them or that JJ was scared to death.

I really believe Les and his Offensive coaches froze up. He simply sat there and truly thought that the ST's would make a play and bail the O out like they did against Ga.
Or that the D would get a turnover like it did against bama the first time.
He played conservative ball (which is fine sometimes) even when the game was dictating for us to open the field and take some chances.

I can promise you, Les is still sitting there today thinking he did the right thing. That JJ gave us the best chance to win. I have no idea what Lee did to now deserve a chance. But, if they lost all confidence in Lee then they should have taken the time over the 6 weeks to get Mett ready in case we need to throw the ball.

All we as fans can do is hope that Les learned from his mistake. Let's not forget that this is a young team.

tup, I heartily agree. I have been following LSU for over 50 years and I can't remember a worse job of adjusting the game plan to the situation. My first text to my brother-in-law after the 1st qtr was that you can't beat Bama going side to side. His wife had uttered the same statement just before I texted. We could see it, why couldn't the coaches ?

That being said, there was much profanity and alcohol-consumption in the OTF household last night. Wish my first post could have been on a happier note. Oh well, the sun did come out this morning and I didn't have to go to work.

Hope to be able to post more often now that I am free from bondage.

This game was not even close to even in the trenches. Our offensive line got beat down and Sam Montgomery got owned by Barret Jones all night. Jones made him his bitch.

You've got a stronger stomach than I've got. I doubt I'll ever re-watch that game. I do agree with you for the most part based on my recollection of events last night. Just a couple of comments...

quote:

This time Bama threw the ball on first down. They broke tendency. We didn't.

We either didn't or couldn't. They could afford to break tendencies because they knew their quarterback could probably carry out that assignment. I don't think our coaches have the same confidence in any of our quarterbacks.

quote:

...entire idea of a rematch.

I agree that a rematch was unfair but it was mostly unfair to Ok. St. If we can't win the rematch then we don't really have an argument to make about it.

quote:

Our coaches and our players were never forced to look at themselves in the mirror and ask themselves how they could improve...

Agree again but they shouldn't have to be forced to do that. It's just a natural part of (I hesitate to say this) the process. Teams should always scout themselves and break tendencies when they find them. More than that, they should try to anticipate what the other team will do and gameplan accordingly. Saban anticipated that we would use the option because it was the only thing that worked in the first game. He taught his team how to stop it. We didn't anticipate that they would not run much on 1st down...even after they did it for 2 quarters. And we had no answer.

It was a Tebow type game plan but in the end, there was no miracle. This team won every game because in every game, they were able to create a turnover or punt return for a momentum swing.

Bama definitely understood the game more than LSU.

Complacency and stubbornness are a dangerous combination.

After careful, painstaking, scientific analysis, my results indicate that Red Tails is a far more inspirational movie than Contraband.

I agree in theory. However, no one will ever convince me that if Bama had won the first game that we wouldn't have looked like the team on the mission last night.

Who knows what would've happened, but I know what I watched wouldn't have happened.

As great of a motivator as Saban is, he must have an attentive audience, and if they had won the first game, and the exact same set of circumstances had unfolded, they would have been at least moderately complacent.

Everyone of them talked about how much that first loss hurt, how they weren't going to let that happen again. That's exactly how they played.

I'd be interested to see if we were the team in that position.

Bama looked like they were on steroids. They were throwing our players around like rag dolls. It was alarming.

And the speed looked dramatically different from game one (they were really fast then too...but they looked like they had 20 guys on D).

It seemed they knew every play we had before it even developed. And of course, our offensive game plan was so conservative and pathetic that it made it really easy for them.

I plan to rewatch the horror show...but I saw everything you saw last night...spot on analysis.

I think Les needs to realize he's is going to need a reliable passer that can threaten down field if he wants to compete against the level of play Alabama displayed last night. We cannot expect to run our way to a national championship...even though we almost did this year. Saban realized this after Nov 5, and he got Mcarron ready to become the centerpiece of the Alabama offense since he knew relying solely on Richardson was not going to get it done. Les should be coming to the same conclusions right about now.
