I know one thing, the rent a wins were a lot more fun to go to without commercial breaks. It's so much better to watch football without a five minute break every time you punt the ball. And a 30 second timeout was just that, a 30 second timeout.

I also remember a gentleman in the Northeast End Zone with a megaphone yelling "Tiger Bait" dang near non-stop at every game.
That was Big Red. He was a legend in TS and in the old John Parker Coliseum. Great fan who could be heard in every corner.

Ahh...the days when it was about the game...and fans were there to watch and support, not for nachos. Some of you missed the real deal. BTW, Tuscaloosa is the worst today for blaring speakers filled with crap (non-Bama biased opinion) frigging high school atmosphere

I was a kid in the 70s and student at LSU in the 80s and I absolutely remember the doctor pages over the PA.
This post made me smile.
This was before cable, so there were very few games on TV. Now they're everywhere, and I love that, but the TV timeouts are just infuriating.
I realize it's all about money, but I'd like for one AD, JUST ONE, to stand up ONE TIME and say no - we'll allow TV timeouts but make them shorter. Draw a damn line in the sand, because TV will always want more revenue, so the trend will be to extend games even longer.
I want ONE AD to step up and push back, for the overall good of the game.
It'll never happen though. Money talks.

Bryant-Denny Stadium is a great stadium and the Bama campus is beautiful, but I agree with the blaring speakers there. Their piped-in music is just awful, and completely inconsistent with a traditional college atmosphere. I feel like I'm in a nightclub. It's a joke.

This era of football is still the best ever and blows away early 2000s, 90s, 80s, and prior. Having season tickets is great and I love going to games over watching on TV, but having the ability to watch every game in HD regardless of how crappy the opponent is unmatched. I remember being forced to listening to a game @Kentucky on the radio in the 90s because it wasn't broadcasted on TV. I remember being forced to watch LSU road games that were picked up by Jefferson Pilot in Standard Definition with the crappiest broadcasting quality imaginable.
Standard definition games were so bad that you couldn't see the team's formations on a play or read the jersey numbers to tell who was in the game. You can be as nostalgic as you want about those prior eras, but you had less access to quality broadcasts, fewer replay angles, games decided by shitty calls, and little to no access to 24/7 coverage of the team/recruits/interviews/player updates etc etc.
This era may slow down a game, but it is light years better than any era prior due to the access of content. I'll sit through a slightly longer game and take all of the modern benefits. GTFO with your nostalgia

There is no debate that the current era is the TV era and that fans AT HOME get the best coverage, more games, and better quality broadcasts than anytime in history.
But the days BEFORE RV took over were much, much better for the fans even though the games now have replay screens which have made games better in person.
If there was a happy medium between the days of yesteryear and what we have now, I'd love to see it; however, its only going to get worse. Money talks and BS walks and right now the TV networks are writing huge checks.

I am amazed how some people think the commercials haven't hurt the game for attendance and the overall game experience. When we are on CBS how many posts do we see about how many damn commercials they will have

LSU vs OLE MISS in 1972. Bert Jones to Brad Davis for the TD as time ran out.

Yep, the orange game was amazing. And what a great year overall for LSU football.

1997 Florida vs LSU is about as pure as it gets
O what a night.
I left Louisiana to go off to law school. I had no TV. Somehow I found a radio station that carried lsu games. An obscure but mostly clear AM signal. I would study in my little dim ghetto apartment in the big city on Saturday nights, sitting on the couch and my books on the coffee table, while listening to that glorious radio broadcast that traveled through the night and connected me back home.
When the intensity picked up, I would pause and stare across the room at the stereo, fixated to hear the play described. When it really got tense, sometimes I would even get up and pace.
"LSU going for it all here on fourth down...he's out of the pocket, running to his right...throws downfield...IT'S CAUGHT...HE CAUGHT IT...THAT'S BUSTER DAVIS DOWN THERE WITH THE CATCH O YOU GOTTA LOVE IT!"
I cherish those nights.

I quit going quite a while back due to
* commercial timeouts
* penalty review delays
* big screen replays take away from the intensity of the field
* piped in music
* non-stop ads on screens and audio
Back in the old days the ONLY thing going on was on the field. You paid close attention to each and every play because if you missed it, it would be gone forever. The field today is just one of many things going on and much less important. Tiger stadium today looks and sounds like a 3 ring circus to me (or an NBA game).

Went to that Georgia game. All their fans were saying after the game they would see us again in Atlanta and things would be different. They got the first part right.
Also went to the Florida game that year. Team was not prepared to play. It happens.

Nice story, but you make it sound like it was back in the 60's....lol. That wasn't that long ago, relatively speaking. Ha

Do you remember when a college game lasted 2 1/2 hours. 3 hour games were for the pros. Every home game started at 7:30 and we were on our way out at 10:00 pm. Games were televised, but the network broadcast was tailored to the game, not the game tailored to the broadcast. Colleges prostituted the game for network dollars.

This is one of the reasons I love rugby. Two 40 minute halves. And the only extended time out is for halftime.
It's also why so many people have gotten into soccer.
