It seems like we have a game changing KO return happen on us atleast once a year so it might help us out

Like right when we have all the momentum and go up by two scores, boom the other team pops a KR for a score or good field position

I may be wrong, but I think they only do that in the pros.

Instead of eliminating kickoffs they could fix this by forcing the defending team to line up within 15 yards of the ball.

What's causing the problems is the relative speed of two men running full speed towards each other. That's why we don't have the same magnitude of problem with punt returns.

Yeah no way they could do away with punts that would never work out.

Just make a rule that the ball be placed where it lands on a 4th down incompletion. JaMarcus could get a job as 4th down QB.

the 4th and 15 idea is just stupid.

They have already moved the ball up enough at the pro level that just about every kickoff is a touch back.
The most returns this year was 37 by Abdullah. Only 4 guys had over 25 returns this past year.
10 years ago, 20 guys had over 40, led by Carr with 73.

There's barely more than 2 actual kickoff returns a game in todays game.

The hits come in college and high school where you have unequal levels of talent.
How many college athletes can block Brandon Jacobs running full speed for 40 yards into the little wall they used to form in front of the returner?

There's no way around it in college, but i think it would be stupid to get rid of it. It's a part of the game. Not having the ability to onside kick is a game changer. Not having to kick to Trindon Holiday is a game changer. How many times have we seen teams kick it to some tight end with a pooch kick to avoid having PP7 or Trindon return the kick, or kick it out of bounds.

It's a part of the game and it is meaningful to the outcome of the game. If you don't like it, Don't play. Some people don't like working in chemical plants, so they don't. Some do, and they know the risks. Football is a job with risks, and they are compensated heavily for it. Some guy in a UFC fight this weekend got his skull literally kicked in. Are they going to ban knee hits now?

I would keep kickoffs but have them with rule changes. Have the kickoff from the 40 yard line. Most kicks would go so far deep or past the end zone so the number of returns would be greatly reduced and put the ball at the 25 or 30 to reduce the likely hood of runbacks. You can still take it out if you want, but it would be rare.

You can still have onside kicks

Greg Schiano's idea is after a touchdown or field goal you give the team that scored a 4th and 15 from the 30. You can punt it or go for it to maintain possession. I like that idea. Easier to complete a 15 yard play than an onside kick.

Gee, how much longer would this make a football game or would this fall only under curtain situations?

Yeah now that I am reading other post I think this won't work. Just do as the NFL and kick 90% out the endzone. Of course against us they still will be returning kickoffs

Reasons I can’t see this working well:

1. Onside kicks are a huge part of close football games and close football games are a huge part of what makes football awesome
2. Field position swings when teams have weapons back there would be negated. How many times did we get the ball at the 35 just because teams wouldn’t kick to PP or Trindon? So they’re just going to try and make everything equal here despite obvious advantages/disadvantages teams would normally have? I say that’s bullshite.
3. Gets backup and younger players a chance to see the field. How many players would have never or rarely played in their entire career if it weren’t for kickoffs and kickoff returns?

However, there is a possible solution to onside kick thing.

Just say teams have a choice. Give it to the other team at the 25 or kick an onside's kick.

This is one of the most ridiculous things I've ever read about college football. What about an onside kick? One of the most exciting things about a kickoff is that its a live ball once it goes past 10 yards and can play a huge role. Just automatically giving the ball to the other team is fricking stupid.

The Boss Hawg was on Mike & Mike this morning and said he was on a NCAA committee that studied this issue. He said the stats were quite stark in pointing out that the number of player injuries on kick offs were twice as high as on any other type of play. He said it was hard to argue against in that light. He commented that rule never considered that today there are 6'5" 250 lb players running full speed after a 30 yrd running start at another player.

there are ways around that. Like allowing kickoffs but no returns, so if the ball is fielded by the receiving team, they get the ball either at that spot (if outside the 25) or at the 25 (if fielded inside the 25). That would still allow for onside kicks. Or the kicking team could just waive the kickoff and give the other team the ball at the 25, to save time. I think the result would be a lot of pooch kickoffs to the 25 or so and hope the other team fumbles the catch.

Might as well go this route and just get it over with.

don't be dramatic. Surely you can understand the real issues here.

The players' bodies have changed over the past few decades, but the skull and brain remained the same. The rules are just going to have to be continuously tweaked to reduce some of the violent collisions.

There will always be full-contact football. Based on advanced medical knowledge about the brain and CTE, there will just have to be changes for player-safety purposes. If not, and we just continue on as-is, then I do think ultimately the entire game would be in jeopardy.

So don't bury your head in the sand. The rules can be tweaked and the game will still be 90% of what it once was. Just safer for the players.

That was the worst call of a LSU touchdown I've ever heard. I must have had the sound down and listening to JH on the radio when that took place.
