How Did We Get Here?

How did we go from a year in and year out, championship contending program to this? The past three seasons we're
8-5
9-3
6-4
We've had top five recruiting classes for at least the last four seasons. In 2013, when Fournette was a senior at St Aug I remember when he committed at the Under Armour game. At that point, I figured we'd be right back contending for championships. How in the world did we have, what may be the greatest player in our program's history, and during his career the best we could do is a three loss season? How in the world could we have a season in which we're preseason top five, have what is acknowledged as one of the top five most talented rosters in college football, and end up with a WORSE record than the year before.......................when we had a three game losing season at the end of THAT season.
If Orgeron won out, and was offered the job, I really didn't have a problem with that...........I also didn't have a problem with them bringing in a new coach. But now, it's clear we really need to put an end to the Les Miles era....................it was a great era. But it's clearly run its course. The fan base is tired of seeing great defenses that have to play PERFECT in order for us to win big games. It's time for a philosophy change, and that means bringing in a whole new staff. Hopefully, we can keep Aranda since he's really not a part of the previous philosophy (having been here only one season). But clearly, that change in philosophy and break from the previous regime is necessary. As someone once said on this board....................."being an LSU football fan is not fun anymore". I still can't believe we had Leonard Fournette and couldn't even make a New Years six bowl, much less an SEC championship game! What do you guys think? I'll hang up and listen..............

Its pretty simple. Bad offensive scheme, and no QB/QB development.

We've been whistling past the graveyard for a long time now.

We got here by firing the coach now two years too late.
Miles did not have the energy to run a program of this stature. Miles was more interested in being right than winning. Miles was more interested in hiring buddies than hiring top people. Miles showed that he wasn't going to change.
While all of this was obvious, our fans didn't demand excellence and our administration got betrayed by politics. Now, we pissed away at least two seasons praying that what was happening wasn't really happening.
Also, we got played by our idiot former head coach and Jeff Long into weakening our ability to hold Miles accountable.

How? Les Miles and these pathetic fricks who put him above the program and cried to keep him.

No QB
Offense from the 1960s
Weak in the trenches
STs coached by an idiot who ought to be manning the sporting goods counter at Walmart.

Easy now Katy Tiger, working at the sporting goods counter is a lot more complicated then that village idiot can handle.

F*king Alexander. With Jimbo, we're a better team and have a brighter future right now

I think it goes much deeper than us not letting him go after last season. The program hasn't been the same since the 21-0 loss in the 2012 national championship game. What happened to us?

My theory: college football changed dramatically between 2007 and 2016. First and foremost, various iterations of the spread revolutionized offense and fundamentally altered the way championships could be won. Second, the SEC strengthened: Saban turned Bama into a juggernaut, traditionally mediocre programs (e.g. Ole Miss) improved, teams across the league hired better coaches and were less tolerant of failure. Third, on a national level, as revenues grew, schools invested ever increasing sums into glittering facilities, staffs, recruiting, and their programs generally. All of college football improved.
While these paradigmatic changes were occurring, LSU stood pat, burdened with a prideful coach who was either unwilling or unable to adapt to the changing times. We persisted in an antiquated, predictable offensive scheme and recruited players which fit that scheme. Worse, our D and O line recruiting dropped off. Now we've fallen behind, albeit only by a small margin. We still have talent, but it is no longer deployed in an optimal scheme.

Because everyone figured signing top notch classes with a one in a generation back was a guarantee while the nega-tigers were holding up the warning signs about lack of development. Hell the NFL scouts new that talent was not being utilized. Now here we stand with a clown called AD getting ready to make the most important hire for LSU Football and all he has done since his arrival is embarrass LSU.

That's pretty much perfectly said.
You have to be able to both score 50 points on a good defense and hold a good offense to less than 10 points on any given day. You have to be able to respond when the game gets into a shootout or respond when it's a low scoring affair and make the plays in whatever type of contest you get in. Look at bama winning games 10-0 or, in that rare case they get scored on a bunch - 50-43. Ohio state, bama, etc can all do this.
I think one thing that happened is that the game now puts a lot of pressure on the offense to make plays - both to keep up with the other teams scoring or to put pressure on the other team to try to keep up. Under miles he wasn't concerned about the offense making plays and ultimately it backfired.

Les Miles.
I flipped over to the Michigan game after the final play and there he was in the booth, the architect of this abortion.

It's been a slow burn. The main thing, is people only worrying about the result, and not the process. In other words, a win was just a win. Ignoring the context of opponent, how we won(or lost), coaching decisions within the wins.
It's why for years people just cited Les Miles' winning percentage. HE'S WINNING!!!! WHO CARES HOW HE DOES IT, they said. Anyone with a fricking brain saw this coming.

Les Miles should have been fired after last season, if not before. Now it is a disaster.

This is right. I would add that eventually Les Miles' deficiencies started taking a toll on his ability to win games. It was fine when he fricked the clock up against Auburn because Flynn and Byrd bailed him out. It was fine when he didn't go for two there because Auburn didn't make him pay by returning the kickoff for a touchdown and beating him.
Eventually, though, his inability to manage games cost him a games against Arkansas, Penn State, Ole Miss. His affinity for his buddies cost him the 2008 season and hamstrung LSU for two seasons after that.
He stopped getting bailed out by the Derek Dooleys of the world. A miracle running play like at Georgia in 2009 stopped saving his bacon. He needed to do fundamental things to win games that he couldn't do. That's where it went south on him.
