I love LSU MBB, it is my favorite LSU sport. Been a season ticket holder since 1976.

Anyone who thinks we are a serious contender for a Final Four spot is clueless about college basketball. Who is gonna rebound for us? Who is gonna lead our inside D? Our inside O? The bigs at LSU now have shown little talent to do anything big inside. Ben Simmons is NOT an inside player, not on the college or NBA level. He'll penetrate well but not be a major D force inside, imo.

I think LSU has enough talent to contend for an SEC title IF at least one of the bigs (Victor maybe?) can come through and be a dominant player inside.

If the MandM boys had stayed one more year, we might have had enough to get to the FF.

Holy shite. So Coach Jones will be expected to do something that hasn't been done in 100 years?

Also, Simmons is the first consensus No. 1 high school BB player since Lebron.

Ben Simmons is not a consensus No. 1 prospect, but he's an exceptional play-maker. I'm looking forward to see what he does on the college level.

How many active Division I coaches have won national championships? I believe it is 11 now that Billy Donovan has gone onto the NBA. That is a shade over 3% of all active D-I coaches.

It takes a special, special team to win a national championship, and it is unfair to say a coach like Johnny Jones is "expected to" put LSU in position to win a national title.

Congrats, you found the exception to the rul

It's not even that. Melo wasn't even the only first round draft pick on that team. Posters that think it was melo and a bunch of scrubs have no idea what they are talking about. It was Hakeem Warrick who made the game saving block in the title game. While Melo was the star there were several great players on that squad.

Ok the rest of us are clueless,we have no inside talent, and no shot at a final four

The more realistic question, and one we may well get the answer to, is "Can Johnny survive Ben Simmons without a NCAA tournament win?"

To those who disagree with my statement about Ben being the first consensus No. 1 player since Lebron (I wasn't referring to recruiting rankings), please see this link with the following quote:

quote:

Simmons is the first consensus national player of the year since NBA superstar LeBron James of St. Vincent-St. Mary (Akron, Ohio) in 2003. Lopez also was a consensus pick and there has only been seven prior to Simmons dating back to 1955.

I think we have to keep making progress. We need to win more games this year than last year. We need to stop losing to inferior opponents. Jones needs to grow as a coach. He needs to learn a few inbounds plays. We need to win a tournament game. Rest is lagniappe.

Who was the last consensus #1 player in the country to go to college?

It's not like he has a choice. As of now he isn't the #1 draft pick in next year's draft. I pretty sure he will be though.

Contending for an SEC title means a top 4 finish in the SEC. That would not qualify a team for the Final Four, imo. We WON the SEC in 2009 and could not make it past the second round in the NCAAs. The SEC is not a hotbed of potential FF teams in MBB this year.

I'm just glad that everyone seems to be taking a realistic approach.

FWIW-I think it's very possible we make a run to the Final Four because I think Simmons is that good and he has some pretty damn good players around him this year, with Blakeney, Hornsby, Quarterman, Patterson (his old teammate from Montverde) and possibly Victor, among others. But, I also understand that you need a whole bunch of things to go your way to win a title. Just ask Coach Cal.
