Pat Screen and Nelson Stokley, but I was too young to know at that time.

Damn... that TigerKnights dude is ridiculous. There are a few posters on here that put their strange love for JL/hate for JJ ahead of the team... but I don't think all the posters in "Team Lee" feel that way.

But some of them certainly do... and would love nothing more than to see LSU lose simply b/c JJ starts.

We also had Bert Jones and Paul Lyons. I ran into Bert Jones in the BR airport and tried to make a little conversation, and the guy simply said he did not like Cholly Mac because of the 2 qb situation that he played under. My respect for Jones diminished a little after the ranted on about this. He seemed very bitter. Can't blame him but he should have kept it to himself.

This was early 1970's. It wouldn't have been a controversy if Jones hadn't pissed away the Orange Bowl coming in for an injured Buddy Lee. The perfect storm of upsets had happened all day. Orange Bowl was last game of the evening. Both locker rooms had been informed of the upsets and that whoever won the Orange Bowl was probably going to be NC by AP and UPI. Bob Devaney was coaching Nebraska at the time, and of course, Cholly Mac - LSU. Buddy Lee got hurt in the second half and had to come out. Jones, a sophomore, went in. On a critical fourth down and short on what would have been the winning touchdown, Jones ignored the play sent in and checked off. What should have been a very easy short gain came up for naught. Nebraska took the ball over and ran out the clock, thus barely edging us out for the win. Mac and Jones reportedly did not speak to each other for months. Mac pulled Paul Lyons off defense, and ran a two QB system with Lyons starting. However, this would eventually change late in the season when Notre Dame came to town. Upon Jones' departure, he commented that the highlight of his career at LSU was leaving. When the media asked Cholly Mac for a response, he said that Jones was not the most coachable player he ever had.

Wow! I remember the game as an adolecent (71 OB) but didn't know this inside info. I remember Terry something (Hage?)scoring at the end for N and we lost 12-17? Thought that we really had no shot at the title?

Woodley-Ensminger is most vivid in my memory. And it persisted into the pros in an odd way. Ensminger was signed by the Saints, I think. Woodley by Miami. When one of the other QB's that Miami signed was cut in favor of Woodley, that QB (from Stanford?) was picked up by N.O. and Ensminger was cut.

I think Woodley was the only rookie QB to start in the SB up through that time.

Yeah, there is a controversy, like the teaching of evolution controversy. The controversy exists only in the narrow little minds of idiotic nebishes.

We have a coach of the year, the best in LSU history, we're 13-0, we just won the SEC, we will likely win the Nat'l championship, we have a Heisman candidate, and these fools are griping because the 2nd string QB isn't getting unuf playing time.

As I said yesterday, there isn't a high maintenance bitch in the world harder to please than an LSU fan.

Well, just 33 more days and we'll be through with it. Mett is a better all around qb than both JL and JJ. Miles said that mett was best passer. Next year will be a breeze.

Not sure if there's ever been a more polarizing QB controversy as this one at LSU. I sure don't remember one.

And yet you feel the need to dredge one up again. The two sides have drawn their lines in the sand, only a few weary rantards are in the middle trying to keep peace, and you post this little turd up on the front page for everyone to squabble over again. I feel like someone farted in church and we're scrambling for the exits.

Lets get one thing straight. Lee is the back up quarterback. He has been all season, JJ just had to get some playing time before you put him behind the wheel of this team. Lee did a great job, there is no doubting that. And I have no doubt that if JJ goes down, Lee will come in and play well again. But he is the backup, was the backup, and will be the backup until he is gone.

And he is one heck of a backup

No! There was no Tiger Rant at the time, so nobody could bitch about it.

I remember in the early 60's Jimmy Field would come in and tick my dad off. Seems like Lynn Amadee moved the team better and Field would kill the offence. Then it was Stokely vs Screen. There were rumors the team would lay down when Screen came in cuz they liked Stokely better. I am sure there were more going back in time but that was before my time.

MF vs JR was good......and the rant wasn't retarded enough to really get into Randel vs JR.

Maybe not bigger but the Davey/ Booty battle got pretty intense. Add in Craig Nall who actually started that season off as the starter. The funny thing is that many make the JJ/JL QB battle out to be a race issue, but if I remember correctly, a majority of the fans that year were begging for Davey to play and he was the only Black quarterback of the three.
