Has LSU ever had a universally loved head coach of a major sport?

The closest to fitting this in my mind would be Skip Bertman.

Can't think of any other, no matter how much success he/she may have had. This fanbase inevitably turns on its coaches and eats them alive. This is even more common and pronounced in the internet age. I sometimes get angry at the coaches and wish they'd make different decisions, but I just can't grasp the sincere hate that some of you can muster for a man, in this case Miles, who has had a hand in bringing so much joy to LSU fans.

Bertman was pretty much liked by everyone. I think that most people like Johnny Jones and Caldwell.

3: Dale Brown, Skip Bertman, and Nick Saban. They even had 2/3 for years and years (Bertman and Brown from 87-97 and Bertman and Saban from 2000-2001)

Also, prior to her sex scandal (and afterwards, honestly) Pokey Chatman in women's basketball (2004-2007) and before her, Sue Gunther (1982-2003)

Bo Rein. They either die a hero or live long enough to see themselves become the villain.

Bertman is probably the one. The jury is still out Jones. He's recruited well but as of yet has produced nothing on the court (2 .500 finishes in a bad SEC). You might be able to throw Saban in there with Bertman. It was a sad Christmas day when he decided to leave.

Those coaches are so new it's pointless to compare. Also no one cares much about womens bball.

Bertman was universally loved because he was a legend.

You're way off on Caldwell. If anything she's bizarrely hated.

I can remember plenty of fans calling Dale Brown incompetent and a clown even as he was taking teams to the final four. As for Saban, maybe for a while when he was here, but very much hated now.

When you spend the kind of money it takes to tailgate and watch your team these days, you expect the best from your coaching staff and you expect wins. There's a lot of things fans can do with that disposable income these days and watching a bad product is not one of them.

To a certain extent the SEC has raised the bar with the lower teams understanding what it takes to compete and what you have to do to be successful. The west going forward will continue to be difficult and the way coaches have done things needs to change and adapt to what the personnel is doing around you in conference.

yep guy was one of the greatest coaches ever to coach college baseball, but I'm sure if he was still coaching today rantards would still call for his head.

Such an unfitting nickname. Should've been Lickey.

As baseball coach.

As athletic director, plenty of people hate on him for hiring Les Miles and for picking Smoke Laval to succeed himself.

Anybody who criticizes what Skip accomplished as baseball coach should be drawn and quartered.

Bertman wasn't cursed or thrown under the bus by the fans...
Dale Brown was here before internet, but a lot of fans questioned his coaching intelligence just like they do CLM's today...
McClendon got a lot of heat over the years, but he retired and didn't get fired...He was hard headed just like CLM...
I think the problem you see with today's fans, most of the ones on the tardbox here are under the age of 40 and come from the "I want it now" generation and throw a freaking tantrum just like when their mommy wouldn't buy them any candy at the check out counters at wally world...apparently, their moms treated them like CLM treats his player, with kids gloves...all that loving and nurturing really helps build team work, not necessarily discipline...
