Dude is going to be fine. Asking a true freshman to play qb in the sec is asking him to fail. Any qb needs a buffer period and he was thrown to wolves. The fact that this dude stood up to the pressure instead of transferring like a lot of people thought he might, tells me everything I need to know about him.

Seriously, have you ever seen a college playbook?

Knowing the playbook and being anle to use it properly are two different things. LSUs offense is most effective when the QB reads the defense properly and adjusts appropriately. An incoming QB needs two yrs in the system to know it and be effective

BH ran a totally different offense in HS. When he came here, he clearly underestimated the difficulty in transitioning to a pro style set

It's like we should be recruiting QB's that run a similar system as we do....
Not that many out there.

Where is the information coming from that BH doesn't know the playbook?

There are plenty out there... but then people would be bitching about Miles recruiting 2* QBs.

I signed as a QB at NLU when Doug Pederson was a senior. Nlu also put Brister and Humphries in the league and Dave Roberts(HC @ W. Kentucky, NLU, Baylor and Holtzs OC at Notre Dame and USCe) was the HC. They ran a pro style offense.

I say this because some idiots will say you can't compare NLUs offense to LSUs. I had to quit soon after I got there because of an injury, but I was there long enough to get a playbook and practice. Not many on this board understand the complexity of a college pro style offense.

Harris not knowing the offense had nothing to do with his work ethic. College plays have multiple variations based on the defensive alignment. In high school you call the play and run it. In college you call a pass play and the route is based on the coverage being played. So, the QB is responsible for making sure everyone in lined up properly, checking the protection, getting the play off on time, the cadence correct, reading the coverage and then knowing what outes are being run based on the coverage. I.e. Corner blitz and Z receiver runs a hitch instead of a Go route.

Anyway, it's a lot more to learn than the average fan knows and it's frustrating to read people saying these things when they have no clue and probably never put on a helmet.

probly came from the coaches, and was a very good move by them
glad everyone was thinking he didnt know the plays, at the same time thew knew he had all the tools and would be dangerous

better than--

brandon has a bum ankle that needs the proper rehab (very limited playing time) to heal properly

Yes good points about how the average fan doesn't realize the difficulty involved.

Also hopefully after a year at LSU, Harris knows the areas where he needs to improve and the coaching staff gives him a fair chance to win the job--something I don't think Mett got the first year he was here in 20111.

Another point is that we're hearing he doesn't know the playbook but that may mean he's not able to read defenses quickly enough which may mean he didn't adjust to the "speed of the game." So many different ways to say things but ultimately they mean the same thing, it's difficult to come in and play QB in the SEC as a true frosh.

I'm sure everyone agrees QB is the most difficult position to play as a true frosh, so I just don't get the expectations.

BTW, I think we'll see a ton of improvement from Harris this year.

Coaches have to adapt to their personnel. Miles and Cameron continue to try to fit a square peg into a round hole.

According to our starting center, Harris has made great strides. I think we'll be fine.

Good post. And really we run a NFL pro style under cam. Harris will get there and when he does watch out. He's still showing a one read and run tendency from spring game that I watched over and over. AJ mechanics looked improved and doing a better job at going thru progressions. I'm goin with Harris to win the job but Idk if he can do it by end of fall camp. If he starts mcnese and shows solid command he may start at msu. Personally I see a 2 qb system early on. Unless one just really seperates themselves in camp. AJ will not be as easy to unseat as ppl think and it's not because of being clm pet. I'm still going with Harris to win it but idk if he can by end of camp maybe by halfway point in season. We can win with both qbs. Both will surprise imo.

Who said he doesn't know the play book?

The coaches thought he knew it well enough to start him on the road against a top 10 team last year.

What's so incomprehensible about it? You talking about a teenager who the year before was probably playing in front of a thousand people. The pressure on the guy was intense and continual.

What's incomprehensible to me, are fans who seem to have no idea about the complexity of playing quarterback at LSU and in the SEC. Guys who can just walk in and take over or rare. It normally takes 2 to 3 years with in a major college program to gain a full command of everything thati a QB needs.

I will be pleasantly surprised if Harris is able to step in at quarterback for LSU in such a short period of time and do so without some major Missteps.
